Excellent information in English; caveat about the E-bikes
May 2019 • Couples
So much great information in English here about all of Tono's attractions.
If you're getting a bike here, be warned: the E-bikes cost more, but the batteries in them are old and don't keep a charge. We got E-bikes and they ran out of charge in less than a day, leaving us with much heavier bikes to pedal with no assist on a windy day. DO get a bike, but get a regular one.

Visit here first ... to get your KAPPA licence!!!
Apr 2018 • Couples
This is where you can get your "official" licence to capture the KAPPA (river spirits) at the tourist info bureau ... it's on the left, as you walk in the front doors, before the souvenir shop.
There are 2 types of licences, one with a photo (surprisingly enough - it takes up to a week to get), which cost just less than 1000 yen and one without a photo (much cheaper - around 300 yen??? and you get it, immediately). You can dress up for the photo with all kinds of silly KAPPA goods ... and if you go 5 times, in 5 years you can get a GOLD (yellow) KAPPA licence - just like a real Japanese driver's licence. Ha! Ha! Each person needs a licence to fish for? hunt? capture? the KAPPA at Kappabuchi Pond. The licence is laminated and makes a great memory of your trip!!
The tourist info bureau also provides a lot of info in English (pamphlets). They have very clean toilets and a souvenir shop selling lots of KAPPA goods. It's just across from Tono Station, on the Kamaishi Line. You can also rent bicycles from there ...
The car park on the side is free for 30 mins ... and then some (???) if you buy something from the shop ...

The Tourist Information Centre of Tohno
Apr 2017 • Couples
Near JR Tohno Station is the Tourist Information Centre of Tohno. It offers not only free maps and advices for tourists, but also local products for souvenirs. It also has a space for rest (plus restrooms and shower rooms), and a pay locker. For those who wish to visit various areas within Tohno by bicycle, this centre can arrange one for you.

We visited here to ask about restaurant options in the region and the person we talked to was very informative. He spoke good English.
