The castle looks good from a distance but up closer it is a bit disappointing as it has been renovated a bit "Disney" style, but it is certainly worth a visit. The main claim to fame of the area is the birth place of Francis Xavier, co-founder apparently of the Jesuits, so it attracts pilgrims for this reason. It was... More

Surrounded by mountains there is this castle in the west of Navarre's Kingdom in Spain, a beautiful place to visit, in a nice quiet town, with really nice place to enjoy good food! One of those places you should visit at least once in life time.

We never went inside - maybe for more religious visitors than us. The castle looked newly restored, and from the photos inside our hotel, Xabier, we could see this had once been a wonderful place of life and farming. There are portraits with sheep and children playing - but then the authorities decided to move the whole village and build... More

This was the second time we visited this reconstructed castle/museum in three years, so were perhaps less attentative this time than the last. One of us being an historian, however, presented several opportunities to expand on the narrative of the Princely family and its Sainted son Xavier. Worth visiting for the beauty of the Castle grounds and gardens, or if... More

The Castillo De Javier is very interesting. It looks brilliant from the outside, and inside there is a very interesting set of paintings and exhibits. Photos without flash are permitted and there is a nice cafe nearby to sit and enjoy the ambience of the area. Directions to the Castillo are excellent and the way to the Castillo is very... More

Too nice but it looks a bit unreal. If you go off season you will enjoy a nice and quiet visit. Worth to stop by.

Optional tour on our trip to the Aragon and Navarra Pyreness area. A lot of paintings depicting the works of San Francisco Javier, cofounder with San Ignatius de Loyola of the Jesuit Order. Recent renovation of the visitors center. Reccomended.

It's like a dream castle but it's true. Very well conserved and interesting to know St. Francisco Javier's life.

The keep of this castle dates back to when Javier was on the boundary between Moslem and Christian Spain. It was also the birthplace of Francisco Javier, one of the two founding fathers of the Jesuits. The story of the castle and of its occupants is told beautifully by the exhibits. Allow longer than you might think for a "small" castle... More
