On a day trip in the midlands meander, my wife wanted us to visit this attraction. It is in downtown Howick falls near a mini taxi rank. This could feel a bit uncomfortable. The place had only locals and no visitors, the locals were friendly. The place was dirty, unkempt and run down. Not worth a visit unless completely bored and in a bigish group.
Not advisable if alone or a couple.

Unfortunately as the municipality has barracked the road, elderly people or people with disabilities cannot drive in and have to park up the road. This is not the safest spot to leave your car or elderly people. The craft market (or should I say the few that have stayed) have wonderful things at reasonable prices. However, litter is around and very little maintenance. The falls is beautiful but dirty is an understatement. The old cafe is closed and no longer being used. This is such a shame as this used to be a great attraction for tourists and visitors and unfortunately businesses are suffering due to lack of infrastructure, security and maintenance. To embarrassing to include photos.

The viewing platform for Howick Falls was clean and offered a beautiful view of the Falls itself.
It was highly disappointing trying to get access to the viewing platform in terms of parking a bit closer in order to assist those with limited mobility/elderly. The closest parking is about 150m away.
Upon asking for any alternative or assistance at Howick Tourist Info Centre - we were greeted with the most unprofessional and rude manners. This unfortunately tainted the whole experience...
Overall, the surrounding also needs some TLC.

Mesmerizing and great gushing waterfall. Being so close to the top of the falls offers a stunning view 1st time I witnessed it so full obviously after all the recent rains even the river was flowing very rapidly. The area is fairly quite and not much else happening. The parking area was closed off so had to park on the off street parking and do a short walk to catch the glimpse of the falls. Few vendors selling souvenirs. But one should excersie caution as I think it can be a bit risky to venture on your own.

We visited Howick Falls Today. It was such a disappointment. Litter everywhere. The trial that u can take to the bottom of the falls was not well taken care off. There was no information centre. No guards anywhere. It looked neglected and unkempt. I visited about 20 years ago and it has just gone so so bad and so quiet. For South Africa if its quiet its not safe unfortunately

Obviously seeing a waterfall at such scale is always amazing. The stalls nearby are always a must to walk past and have a look, the owners are all very friendly. Preferably go on a Sunny day.
Ps: Don't call any number for 'a trip to the bottom' it's setting you up for an unpleasant experience.

It truly is a great waterfall. The viewpoint is great and there are plenty of opportunities for family photos. The place is fairly well maintained. Lots of interesting flea market stalls to buy souvenirs from.

This is a spectacular waterfall along the Umngeni river which has cut deep through the rock strata over thousands of years. The flow seems to be constant even though the river looks to flow gently. A viewing platform has been provided for photography.
Photoshop may be necessary to deal with figures and washing drying at the precipice. Do take care of valuables in the area.

I often visited Howick Falls as a child about 3, 4 decades ago and had in my mind a picture of how I remember it. When I returned some 40 years later I felt 10 again. Time had come to standstill here and everything looked exactly as I remembered, apart from a few new cafe's and restaurants. The cafe under the huge tree, zink buildings etc sent me straight back to my childhood which was wonderful. SO happy that the place is so well preserved and the romantic feeling intact. Surely a highlight of my Natal trip.

The falls is not spectacular like Victoria or Niagara. It is a long drop and quite a pretty site. Lovely arts and crafts in the area.
