Cool Fortress with Interesting WWII History
I cam here in the off season and the interior keep where you can climb the towers was closed for construction. If it was open I think this would be a four star place. The fortress was used to store captured military equipment in WWII and in 1942 the ammo stored here exploded killing 3,000 people and wounding 12,000 more. No one claimed responsibility due to the innocent casualties in town so it is still unknown if this was partisan activity or an accidental explosion. The huge towers along the exterior walls of the fortress are tilted out due to this explosion. The fortress was pretty complete before 1942, but due to this, the interior doesn't have anything left and is now a park.

Worth a visit - not completely restored, but not just ruins. Glad we went!
I thought this fortress was worth a visit. It's not restored like some of the others, but a lot of parts can be accessed. Parking vs. the entrance was confusing and required a long walk. But the view from the top of the walls was cool. If you are in the are and have time, this is a really cool fortress.

The place has not seen any maintenance in a long time. Fortress is falling apart and the the staircases to the towers are made of wet, molded, brittle wood, and most of them are filled with garbage and bird feces. The whole place seemed as a giant safety liability and it’s definitely not worth seeing.

Really sad. One of the greatest fortress in this part of Europe, with great history, and a lot stories to tell, but look abandoned. Entrance to fortress is terrible, with railway and a lot of junk everywhere. Inside is park, with athletic track, don't know why. There is no any sign or writings to inform about history of this great place, so it's all to you and wikipedia

Smederevo's 15th century fortress is one of the largest plain fortress in Europe. It was built in year 1430. It was Serbia's medieval state last capitol city before Turks conquered Serbia. Currently a lot of restoration is being done (fortress walls, medieval church, Despot's palace, turkish bath...). This fortress is a must see in this part of Europe.

I took a bus from Belgrade to Smederevo as I specifically wanted to see the fortress. I was very disappointed with it. Huge walls but very little to really see. One section you can climb a stair to the walls and walk part of the way around but there'snot that much of a view. The river view is not that pretty. It's a more imposing structure than the fortress in Belgrade but nowhere near as pretty a setting. It's an easy bus ride from Belgrade, about 1 hour 15-30 minutes and on the bus on the way back to Belgrade be sure to sit on the right as part of the journey follows the river bank so there are nice views. The town itself was having a festival when I visited so that made the whole trip from Belgrade worthwhile as I got to see a little of the local culture.

Refurbished fortress with a beautiful view on the river. It is a nice movie set for movies about knights and laddies.

I went to Smederevo in a weekend getaway. The fortress is one of the main landlines in this town and you should not miss it.

Although it is not as big as the Belgrade or Golubac fortresses, Smederevo fortress has its unique charm.

If you can get some of the locals, or a guide from the info desk in front of the inner city to tell you about the history of this fortress, you will be amazed.
