I visit here at least once a year. It's lovely to have a walk around, very peaceful and lots to look at. The views from up here are amazing, on a clear day you can see for miles.

A registered pilgrimage site of the Vatican. In the treasury of the monastir you can find ornaments and jewels of the madonna di Montevergine resulting from the donations made over the centuries by the pilgrims who arrived at the shrine. On the route up to the hill in the closest village every autumn there is a castan festival.

The sanctuary is an important piece of holy history. The black virgin is the symbol of the church that also hosts a famous and interesting "presepio" museum. I suggest to visit the ex-voto exhibition which documents centuries of local religious history. The view from the sanctuary is breathtaking. Also, the sanctuary is a good starting point for nice mountain walks

Beautiful sanctuary with a wonderful "Nativity Scene" collection from around the world and a nice museum. A registered pilgrimage site with the Vatican and historically important. Near the village of Mercogliano which has a tram that can be taken up the mountain or a 20 minute drive by car. Area has nice restaurants characteristic of the local area, highly recommended. I personally recommend "I Santi" in Mercogliano or "Il Volpe" in Ospedoletto (spellcheck). I don't think you will be disappointed. Nice wine in the area, and the house wines are deliciously cheap too. About a 45 minute drive to the area from Naples, Italy. Public transportation to the area is possible, but challenging: bus stop to Avellino from Piazza Garibaldi by main train station downtown Naples or outside walk to main road out of the Capodichino airport to Avellino (Uscito Ovest), then local bus to Mercogliano. A day trip to see the area nicely. Cool in the summer.

I visited Montevergine every time my family visited Italy as my parents we married there and it was a very meaningful place for them but this time I was able to bring my children to marvel at it's beauty and it was better than I ever remember it. it sit high above a mountain which overlooks the province of Avellino. The ride takes shop sharp turns over steep cliffs but it you are in the Avellino area, it would be a shame to miss this. In addition to the sanctuary, there is a restaurant and two gift shops on site - one sells religious article in a range of prices and the other sells food, wine and gifts native to the region and the sanctuary. One of the highlights was visit a hall of "blessings" where the many people who believe that the Madonna's intercession granted them a blessing of either health, life or some other important event will leave a personal article behind to show their thanks to the Madonna. These personal items include jeweler, photos, even young womens' braided hair. Reading all the personal message the devout leave behind is so moving and inspiring. Further up the mountain beyond the Santuario are walking paths and rest stops where you can enjoy lunch or even greater views of the valley.

I was very excited to visit the land of origin of my family, during these visits, I also met this beautiful monastery.
This place, not so far from the city of Avellino, is a place very important and popular for the italian chatolic people, is a place of peace and quitnes,s where it is not difficult to stay relaxed and to think, the view is magnificent but the road to get it is not good.

A very restful and peaceful place to visit with a truly beautiful charch reached on an extremely beautiful and curvy little road up the mountainside. The old cathedral and the new cathedral lie side by side and there are many very interesting (and some frankly weird) things on display in the church and the surrounding buildings but everything is very interesting. the views are remarkeable - you can see the sea and bay of Naples as well as clear views of Vesuvius from up here (they are more than 50km away). There are also lovely and very characteristic villages on the road to the sanctuary. Take the time to visit the little hamlet of Ospedaletto at the base of the road. Especially if you love Nougat. This town is the worlds largest producer of this delicious treat. PS the coffee bar at the sanctuary makes a great coffee and lovely pastry for after your visit.

impressive church, interesting museum especially thee nativity tableaux, great views, scary road. It's a place of pilgrimage and devotion rather than a tourist attraction. You need a good vehicle to get any further up the mountain and into the national park.
