    Museo Nazionale Tarquiniense: Fantastico
What a wonderful experience for me. Many floors of well documented exhibits with exquisite art pieces. As an Italian learner I would have benefited from more English documentation and it would best showcase the incredible collection to a broad collection of tourists. Appreciated that the collection is housed in a such a beautiful Palazzo and the breadth of the collection is outstanding. It would be difficult to fully appreciate the extent of history and the value of the art without advanced research for a non-Italian speaker. I sought help twice from staff on the various floors and they were kind and very helpful(the front desk less so). This museum is a real treasure for Italy. Ohh those winged horses!

    Must go.
If you come to Tarquinia, you go for the Etruscans. Looking at the many objects does not diminish the mystery. The detailed images and the beauty of the grave goods and utensils will remain with us for a long time. Even more texts in English, a museum guide with explanations, that would have been nice.

    Not to be missed
Exactly what I thought I would find, very interesting pieces, well displayed. Clear and understandable explanations, good lighting. The only shortcoming is that I couldn't find any information on any guided tours inside the museum. organized by the staff and there is no space to purchase material on what is exposed. Convenient opening hours (usually closed on Mondays).

Wow che museo. Amazing how many sarcophaguses there are.
Highly recommended experience, welcoming and competent staff, real attention to the disabled, we had great confirmation. Sarcophagi, many, wonderful all with their own story. Objects of various kinds. What I preferred were : jewelry and vases (even those pushed). I fell in love with the queen's winged horses. Wow wonderful perfect and so well outlined to look real... I want one too... Just kidding! They flew me for a while.

    The Etruscans, these illustrious known!
Beautiful museum housed in Palazzo Vitelleschi in Tarquinia. The archaeological finds found are so many and such that many even lie in storage for lack of space. Very rich and spacious rooms with extensive cataloguing of brooches, jewelry, accessories for dressing, makeup, everyday objects for the kitchen and the performance of various work activities. Beautiful glimpses of life. Particular mention for the wonderful high relief of winged horses found in 1938 in a nearby temple. There is so much to learn and material to reflect on. Absolutely not to be missed!

Really worth a visit. Not huge and at a reasonable price of €6 you get to see Etruscan artefacts, Egyptian and Greek too starting from 600 BC. The building is also beautiful and has stunning views over the city and the countryside.

The visit at the Etruscan Museum of Tarquinia complete the visit at the Necropoli (There is the possibility of one unique combined ticket, valid for two days to visit both sites). Besides the remains found during the excavations, the reconstructions of some of the tombs in the necropolis are very beautiful. Then, the winged horses that belonged to the temple "Ara della Regina" alone are worth the visit to the museum

Very interesting museum with lots of artifacts and objects found in the Etruscan tumbs. One of our highlight were the erotic plates and vases, and of course the winged horses that are incredibly beautiful.
Not giving 5 stars because I would have loved to know more about the Etruscan people in general, not only about the objects on display. I feel like a room or two for introduction would be necessary and provide the right context for visitors.

This was a charming museum in a magnificent building. The building alone was worth a visit.
I especially loved the jewellery and the recreations of the necropolis tombs.
Was sadly disappointed at the lack of information in English though. Would have made the visit a 100 times better.

This museum gives insight into the Etruscans, a culture that flourished on the Italian peninsula before Rome rose to dominance.

This is an excellent stop as part of a day trip to Tarquinia. At just six euros, the National Museum is reasonably priced. Be sure to get the combination ticket (it costs just two euros more) that additionally gets you into the Etruscan Necropolis, an ancient burial ground just outside of the city.

The National Museum contains artifacts unearthed from the area around Tarquinia, especially from the tombs in the aforementioned Necropolis. These tombs date from the times when Rome was just a tiny village in central Italy. The artifacts on display include many sarcophagi and pottery. The pottery, some of which is in surprisingly good shape, usually demonstrates a marked Ancient Greek influence. We were particularly impressed by a collection of gold coins from the late Roman Empire period. Supposedly a book was named after a sculpture on display at the museum. It consists of a pair of winged horses, and used to sit on an ancient Tarquinian temple.

Coming from Civitaveccia Port (cruise passenger) - we followed the instructions from a post on tripadvisor guiding us how to buy the tickets from the tabachi and take the bus to Tarquinia. The instructions were spot on but we were turned away from the tabachi very abruptly and rudely. We went on to the station and we're adviser to pop into the Pam Local grocers who kindly sold us their last two tickets. The bus was a good, pleasant 25min ride out of town and stopped just outside the old city walls. We had a walk up the hill on the main street. The view from the top of the countryside was refreshing and memorable. We continued our walk out of the old city to the Necropolis. The combined ticket for the necropolis and the museum was € 8 per person. Don't spend too much time at the tombs and archeological site as the more interesting artifacts are to be found at the museum. In hindsight we should have spent less time there so that we had more at the museum. The museum not only has a very good display, but I was blown away by the building that it was in. Do yourself a favour and do your research before you arrive at the museum The town was a pleasant change from the chaos of trying to get to Rome from Civtaveccia. We wandered around town for a bit and then headed back to Civitavecchia. An easy excursion to arrange yourself and certainly rewarding. Thanks tripadvisor, we wouldn't have been able to do this without the advice received on the boards.

if you like museum, archeology, and especially Etruscan civilization, this is a good museum to visit. I really enjoyed visiting this museum. in addition to its good collection dating back of 3.000 years civilization, the museum building itself is also very good gothic-renaissance architecture.

Located in Piazza Cavour of Tarquinia, a small city around 90km from Vatican city. we combined the ticket for museum + necropolis targuinia, as it got reduction for combining.

Tips Journey For Foreigners:
for foreigner, it is probably a bit challenging, just a bit. the easiest way is having rental car from Rome city passing alongside the seaside (road E80) with lots beaches to stop by. the most interesting city to stop by is Civitavecchia, a port city with beach and historical stuff. But it can also reached by train around 1,5 hours from termini with 13 trains a day. if you decide by train, better take the direct train, just around 1 hour. From Tarquinia station to piazza Cavour is around 3km, and from museum to necropolis around 1,3 km. so it is kind of good walk with nice scenery.

A former Cardinals residence this thorough small museum has an excellent Etruscan collection housed in very evocative rooms, also the view to the coast from the 3rd floor loggia is perhaps the best in Tarquinia. For the collection the absolute jewel in the crow is the beautiful 4th century BCE terracotta horses ( pictured) that look as if they were made yesterday.

If you are into Etruscan artifacts and history of their culture this is a must see stop for folks. About 2 hours+ North of Rome, this small town houses a superb museum on Etruscans and their life styles. This is presented in the usual museum format on several floors of a very old villa at the beginning of town. parking across the street is plentiful under the trees, and inexpensive. The musem has a great gift shop with friendly staff. The museum is open for you to just wander from floor to floor looking at sarcophagi, vases, jewelry and other tomb artifacts. The highlights of the musem are the winged horses from a local temple, removed and placed for viewing on the top floor. While there, the must see is a number, I believe it was 3 painted tombs that have had their paintings removed and recreated within temperature controlled rooms to mimic the actual tomb sites, truely amazing. When you buy your tickets the tomb viewing is an extra, but small fee, so add it to your ticket price for the viewing in rooms on the top floor.

I have to say I had a wonderful day viewing these artifacts truely an amazing culture.

after the one in Rome, this is the best museum of Etruscan civilization. It's a good start before visiting the local necropolis. it's open 5 days a week, closed on monday.
