Incredible place! You can ski from 3250m to 2600m, the longest slope is probably a bit over 2 km. From 2600m there were five lifts that were on. Maybe the only disappointment was that the gondola that would take you from 2600m to the top was closed so in order to get to the top you need to take a gondola, ride a bit down and take a chair lift.
The views are ridiculously amazing. Felt super strange (in a good way) that there was only a few people with me, maybe a hundred skiers in total. Made me feel like I own this place!
It was quite warm so the snow got slushy and slow after noon so go there early in the morning.

First time to Hintertux and really impressed. Being a glacier area you a pretty guaranteed of having good groomers to ski on regardless of the snowfall. Hintertux did not disappoint and provided plenty of great runs to get the ski legs working and spectacular scenery serviced by trams, gondolas and ski lifts. Great places on the mountain for lunch and re fuelling

Went here for a morning of summer skiing. There are a couple of places around the parking lot of the glacier to rent equipment if you don’t have any yourself. A bit crowded when the gondola opened (as everyone wants to enjoy the most of the day). Lots of skiing teams as well. We had a clear day and enjoyed skiing until around lunchtime. Enjoyed ourselves for the day while having lunch on the mountain as well. You do pay full price for the day (almost €50pp) to get up the mountain.

19/01/22 I bought two 59.5 euro tickets in Mayrhofen (Penkenbahn) with plans to ski in "Hintertuxer Gletscher", but when come to it they said that my ticket is not valid and i need to buy another one (+ 2*59.5 euro) so i did it).
On their site, big lightbox near cash desk, different printed material (=everywhere) 1st seller (Mayrhofner Bergbahnen AG) puts "Hintertuxer Gletscher" in the left-up corner so everyone could understand this is included, this one area, but in reality NO and to my mind it is false advertising.
Finally i pay twice for same 119 + 119 euro and the cashier at Penken spoke with the boss and refused the moneyback, turning this case into a chargeback complaint for my bank.
As about connections among "Mayrhofner Bergbahnen AG" and "Hintertuxer Gletscher" owned by "Zillertaler Gletscherbahn GmbH & Co KG" (it partially owned throw Zillertaler Seilbahnen GmbH) so together such "individual ski resorts within Zillertal" took my money twice for ski in one day, and ready for all to keep it.
As about ski - not wort all this, small but not well prepared area and few old ski lifts (+some was stopped)

We came up the gondola to walk along a guided hike which was wonderful for families even with small children. There were several points of interest marked up along the trail, with different activities and things to explore - water play, as well as digging for "gems", etc. Beautifully laid out and easily done with a 4-year-old. Really recommended.

I tried to find information on Summer skiing in Austria before departing Australia in June 2009. Found it quiet difficult, but had read it was possible. We only had a few days to explore Tirol and so asked at the Information desk in Innsbruck. They rang Hintertux Gletscher (Glacier) and confirmed we could ski there. There was still 3 metres of snow up the top. We stayed overnight in Hall in Tyrol and first thing in the morning, drove to Hintertux (about one hour). Our party comprised of five skiers and three non skiers (6 and 9 year olds and their mother).
The people at Hintertux were more than obliging. They arranged a snowplough to take the three non skiers to a special place (more gentle slopes) and also arranged someone to man the rope pull lift, just for us for two hours. The non-skiers got a two hour lesson. For us "intermediate Australian" skiers, we had the time of our life. The runs were better than we get in Australia in Winter but the weather was so warm that we didn't need gloves or jumpers. My teenage kids were thrilled. We only skied the one day but it was well worth it. The only warning is to take a bottle of water and make sure you wear plenty of sun block because we were all blistered (from sunburn) the next day . Our next trip there will be for Winter skiing.

Hintertux glacier is one of the very few places where you can ski all year. Yes, also in Juli and August! In case you want to go skiing in summer, just try to start very early, when the lifts open, to get the best snow of the day.
If you do not ski, it still is worth going up: On a sunny days you can see miles from there, one of the most beautiful views you can find in the alps.
Whether skiing or not the ice cave "Natur Eis Palast" is fun indeed.

Our family spent one day on the glacier during our ski trip to Mayrhofen. We drove by ourselves to the ski resort and it was easy and straightforward. Getting out of the underground parking, the entrance of cable car is just in front of us. Very convenient. We went up to the top by taking 3 cable cars. First run from 3250 meters to 2100 meters was through snow storm and visibility was pretty poor. But around lunch time, weather got better. So we went up again to the top. There was magnificent view and the second run from top to 2100m was totally different experience compared with the first one. So be patient once you get to this glacier. Weather would turn better even if you start with a bad one. :) The slopes were in great shape. Mostly red level slopes but occasionally there are some black ones. Our family including 6 years old daughter managed them easily. It was a fantastic experience and definitely worth a visit if you are around in Ziller valley.

Many people head to the Hintertux Glacier for summer skiing and snowboarding but the trip is also worth it for the experience of snow in summer, stunning views in clear weather and the great walking in the area.
From the base there are 3 lifts up to the highest point with stops in between each with different character.
At the top there is no food or toilets but this is where the snow and the snow activities are - rubber ring sledging was particular popular with our 5 year old. The activity is free but only thing is that it is a bit disorganized with larger or more pushy kids getting access to the play area / rubber rings.
Note the snow is very bright here so you'll need suncream and sunglasses.
There is a playground at the intermediate level too with tricycles and scooters as well as climbing frame etc. reasonable food - selection of salads, soups, sausage and chips etc- well priced with good sized portions.
Lovely easy walking as well as some more challenging routes. Waterfalls, Alpine meadows, etc..

Hintertux is a one-of gletscher, as it is opened 365 days a year. You can summer snowboard at Hintertux every single day. There is a great restaurant, locker rooms, nice bathrooms, well groomed slopes and you can ride all day using gondolas only if you want (no need to use the t-bars nor the chair lifts)

Hi. Using your lift pass you get access to the train system that links Mayerhofen to Zell Am Ziller. Travel down the valley and have a go on their mountain toboggan! It’s loads of fun and only cost €12.00 per person for 3 goes! There is a restaurant situated almost directly outside of the gondola station overlooking the toboggan which serves the best food mate! It’s very reasonably priced also.
You can swim inside the Hintertux Glacier at this time of year you know! Yes, I said swim. I’ve never done it but our guide, Dominic mentioned it.
The free bus service that you can use on your ski pass is brilliant. Mayerhofen is a big place mate.
In the centre of Mayerhofen there is a most splendid church, it’s ancient and looks beautiful at night when it’s illuminated by coloured spotlights.
There’s a cinema if you want to have an evening of relaxation with your mates and there are literally hundreds of places to eat! Enjoy the glacier, it is stunning and Dom, the guide is such a nice guy!

Hi! I would ask you if there are slopes for begginers to snowboard open during the summer and if it's possible to rent there all snowboard equipment. Thanks!

Yes, you can go skiing in Summer and also rent clothes at Sport Nenner. You should know that skiing is (only) pretty in the early morning.
Olá, durante a noite tem alguma opção para subir na geleira e comer em algum restaurante ou bar? Qual o último horário de retorno do bondinho?

Is this a good place to go for people who can’t ski? Visiting Innsbruck soon and I want to be able to go to places with a lot of snow, however, I am not a skier. Just looking for a place to walk around and take in the scenery.

Hello. Yes that is possible. You can use the lifts to get to the top to enjoy the view and the snow. There is actually an attraction up there - a snow/ice cave that is much easier to see if you are not in skiing boots!
Enjoy your visit and remember to bring warm clothes - winds can be very strong on the top.

Hi, I'm getting conflicting information on their website. Does anyone know if Hintertux is open June 26/27 for ice palace, snow tubing, or skiing?
Also, is there is a separate ski rental fee like in the U.S.,or does this lift ticket include the use of skis? I cannot find any information about this on their website.
Thank you so much for any and all help you can give me! Our trip is already short, and I don't want to waste a day there for nothing if it's closed!

Renting ski equipment and renting a ski pass for the lifts are paid for separately.

Thinking of going to Hintertux with the kids. Are there any blue runs for them? Is it a nice area to stay for a week? Or better to stay in Mayerhofen and go up for the day? Thanks.

Is it worth it to go to the park opening weekend since it probably will be very crowded or is it better to visit a week later ?

Not sure as never having attended the opening. My inclination would be to avoid the crowds (and queues) and go a week later.

I'm planning on going here in a few weeks. Will it be really cold at the top? How much extra does it cost to reach the top with a Zillertal pass? Planning on getting bus from Mayrhofen, is it easy to know where to get off/return??

It is cold at the top the glacier is millions of years old. It was free for the first cable car with an active card, the next 2 cable cars cost €42 for two adults, kids were free.
The bus from Myrhofen train station runs every 30 mins and takes about an hour to get there. It's the last stop so that's easy. Read my review if you want to see the ice cave. Decent footware recommended if you don't want cold feet.
