Totally unique and full of surprises to discover!

The historic centre of Isernia is on Corso Marcelli. A long, narrow street running north to south with many alleys (inaccessible by car) running off it, each one different and unique, a walkers heaven, don't forget the camera. The impressive Arch of St. Peter by the clock tower is from the 14th century. The Cathedral from the 3rd century B.C. is right next door. The archeological digs underneath not to be missed. In the historic centre you will also find Baroque and Neoclassical palaces, now housing B&B's, private residences, bars. The centre is a vibrant, thriving community within the city of Isernia, yet in a world of its own. There is much to see, do and savor. Mercato days on Thursday and Saturday. The Saturday mercato is much larger, a shoppers paradise with bargains galore. In the evening during the summer months, through the end of Sept, the place is alive with people strolling, enjoying concerts, feasts, the restaurants, cafes/bars Top rated restaurants and bars are here: O'Pizzaiolo, Existo, Osteria Verdi, Retrogusto, all recommended The bars/cafes serving excellent coffee, aperitifs, gelato: Manhattan Café, Caffee del Municipio, Bar Centrale, all recommended. The Artisans: Antico Forno Giancola, since 1940, producing breads, focaccias, pizzas in wood burning oven. The pizza with pomodoro, sold by the slice, is a must try, so delicious. All their biscottis, sponges, fruit crostatas, the same. Pastificio Artigianale Antenucci, Since 1960, for gourmet food on the go. Domenico the chef/owner prepares daily incredible home made dishes from high quality ingredients all locally sourced. Mouth watering pastas, meats, fish, anything that is in season. You can call ahead and ask him to prepare a special dish to your requirements. You will not find boring fare here, only innovating and creative gourmet dishes reasonably priced. Domenico has a passion for food and it is reflected in his creations, he should be on the Food Network, highly recommend. Arte & Tradizione boutique Artistic and Artigianale of Maestro Antonio Ricci, keeps the art of the Tombolo alive. He is also a painter, his works have been exhibited and he has won many national and international awards. Its worth visiting his boutique right on Corso Marcello, Maestro Ricci is a treasure-trove of knowledge in the local arts. The 1829 SPILLI Atelier, on Corso Marcelli, is the fashion design house that rivals the haute couture houses of Paris. Run by 2 talented designers who previously worked for high end Italian designers, you can have your own original gown, wedding dress, suit, shirts, coat, etc. produced right here in fabulous fabrics sourced in Italy. Affordable luxury!!. Acconciature Annamaria & Luca, hairstylists, tucked away right around the corner from the Cathedral. Went in for a hair trim service and walked out with the best haircut ever. Luca knows hair, very talented, super affordable!

Historic town, a bit worn and dull
Feb 2018 • Solo
The town is very small, about 20 thousand inhabitants, and was heavily bombed during WWII, however it never fully recovered and looked quite dull and worn. The beautiful Fontana Fraterna is though worth a visit.

Picturesque town square
Jul 2016 • Family
Isernia is a lovely and welcoming town. We enjoyed exploring it's streets and shops and businesses in the old section of town. This picturesque town square is a great place to take pictures or enjoy a coffee or drink. Be sure to notice the stone work that marks where the original buildings stood before the intense bombings that the town endured during WW II.
