About
The Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, is both one of the oldest Bordeaux wine properties and one the most pioneering in its approach to the terroir, the quality of its wines and in its insatiable efforts to meet the connoisseurs' satisfaction. For 25 years now, Florence and Daniel Cathiard have inspired SHL a momentum toward nature called "Bio Precision". The quality of the red and white first and second wines grows constantly in the eyes of the national and international critics and the grand vin enthusiast witness it every day as the doors of the underground cellar, the new 100 % gravity operated vat room, the renovated cooperage and the positive energy Stealth Cellar are open all year long, upon appointment.

I had lunch nearby so I decided to take a tour at the Château. Booking on the Château’s website was quite simple. We were walked through the process of barrel making (only 4 in Bordeaux that do this), wine making and aging process, soil types and how that yielded the taste. I read about most of this before, but hearing and seeing in real life including interaction with a knowledgeable guide made a huge difference. The tour concluded with, of course, a tasting session of their grand vin. Highly recommended.

This is one wine tour you don't want to miss. The buildings are gorgeous, the wine cellar is impressive and and the guide was informative. This winery features its own cooperage which in itself was worth the tour. Understanding the role of the barrels in winemaking is not usually discussed much less fully explained. And, of course, the wines were good and the use of oak in aging the Sauvignon Blanc blend results in a white wine that we loved, very different and better to my taste that a typical wine of that variety

This hotel and winery located in Bordeaux, the heart of winemaking, stands out from other numerous chateaus in the area for its wine spa, where you can take wine baths. It is favoured among celebrities for the rejuvenating effect that these baths are supposed to have.
I was mostly impressed with their huge vineyards. One can easily spend a couple of days here without leaving the territory, going to wine degustations and culinary workshops.
The only downside was the heat (we visited in July) which wasn’t ideal for eating and drinking.

Just returned after a five day visit to Bordeaux, with visits to four different wineries. All wonderful and unique, but this was our third chateau and last before ending our journey at Chateau Filhot in Sauternes. And I must say that Chateau Smith Haute Lafitte was a fantastic experience! We had the best tour around the cellars (which are impressing!) and production areas and a very good tasting. And I must compliment our guide! As we stood there enjoying our wine tasting, the owner Mr. Cahtiard, appeared in the room. He was showing some customers around. He asked us where we were from, and realising we were from Norway, he happily told us stories about his life as an olympic skier and his travels to Scandinavia. He then told us he would show us something special - pushed a button, and the oak floors suddenly opened up! He actually had a fantastic cellar underneath, jazz music was playing as we walked down the stairs, and there on the shelves were the most valuable vintages on the entire estate! From the first wine produced at the Chateau Smith (original name of the estate) up until the 2010. He continued telling stories about the cellar and the wines he had collected over the years since he bought the chateau, and this part of our tour - totally unexpected and very unique - just made our visit the most memorable of our entire wine tour of Bordeaux! They also have a great shop where you can buy lots of different accessories as well as some great wines. Great for shopping gifts for those back home who are not lucky enought to be visiting. And best thing - the chateaux is only steps away from the Sources de Caudalie and their wonderful restaurant La Table du Lavoir. Make sure you end your stay here! Would go back in a minute!

We stopped by the Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte winery to take the tour, though we have traveled through more than 100 wineries in the past 10 years. We only thought we would see nothing new, but our guide showed us the excellent barrel maker, new cellars, excellent artwork and introduced us to Florence Cathiard who was so warm and welcoming, we felt like royal guests.

This chateau is very impressive, the tours are interesting and enlightening, but what comes over most is the attention to quality and tradition in the production of the wines. They have their own cooper on site to make the oak barrels they use, graoes are all hand picked, and no chemicals are used on the land. When you get to taste the wines, they are superb. The owner has a fondness for modern art which is why odd sculptures and pictures are widely found around the place, all of which adds to the experience.

I have been curious to visit this chateaux because of the reviews in TA. So I asked the Bordeaux tourist office when this chateaux will be included in the itinerary. They said its the Graves and Sauternes half-day wine tour which fell on a Friday. The chateaux was big and grand. The tour was educational. It was very cold in the cellar as expected but when you come in the summer and just wearing a thin t-shirt, it is very cold so I suggest bring a sweater. The wine tasting was done in the cellar. They let us taste their red and white wine. Both were good but I prefer the taste of the red. We really enjoyed our visit to a grand chateaux like this. Their bathroom was very clean too.

Nice winery with excellent wines. Tour was interesting and enjoyed tasting. Top wine in the area. You don’t want to miss this one
My bad but I do not see the point in spending 230 euro on a bottle of wine. That’s a personal opinion and not a reflection on the quality of the wine

My boyfriend and I visited this Chateau while we were staying at the Caudalie hotel across the street. The Chateau is owned by the parents of both the daughter that founded the skincare brand Caudalie and the daughter that owns the hotel. We biked over and did a wine tasting on a Monday evening while we were there. It was open until 7pm (late by vineyard standards) and didn't require reservations, which was nice. They had several options for tasting, but we chose the cheapest one which for 19 euros you got 3 glasses of wine and you had to guess which one was from the right bank (a pretty fun game). We guessed correctly so the woman gave us some prizes! (a wine bottle opener and a bottle stopper)

One of the most beautiful chateaus I have been to. Dating back to the 17th century, the chateau looks and feels like a medieval village. We did a private tour through the chateau and the wine cellars. Very friendly guide who gave a solid tour of the estate and guided us through a tasting of the various wines. Wines are epic! Well worth a visit when in the region and the private tour is very good value for money.
