A short tropical excursion
Jul 2018 • Family
This place will entertain you for one hour (two hours tops) but it's really worth a visit. The friendly owner gathers his visitors in little groups, brings them in the hothouse, and explains what is there to see & how they raise their butterflies. You're then left on your own to explore the large, hot, humid barn. It's one big space (maybe 20x30 meters) filled to the brim with big troplcal plants, and swarming with all sorts of butterflies. Connected to the main room there's a little 15 sq.m. room for night butterflies, where you can see some really big caterpillars feeding. You can walk all the narrow paths between the plants in the big hall in five minutes, but if you try to see all butterflies, you can easily lose more than an hour - we did close to 1h30. Photo tip: if you bring a good camera with a big lens, also bring a good soft cloth. The hot humid atmosphere will make your lens fog up a lot, until it's up to temprature. Also, a tip from the owner: don't change lenses within the barn, as the humidity will enter your camera.

Entertaining and educational

Some 25 types of butterflies in a beautifully maintained tropical garden. A great place to watch and learn about the lives of butterflies . It will take about an hour to see everything and take loads of nice snapshots. Worthwhile when in the neighbourhood.

Great stop during Family outing in Southern Belgium

Nice little butterfly farm in Chimay, Belgium. Kids enjoyed exploring the mini-jungle to find the different butterflies. They learned about butterfly lifecycles. Friendly staff that speak good English. Signs are also written in English so you can learn about the different butterflies raised in the farm. Small entrance fee of 6 Euro for adults 4 Euro for 3-18 yrs. Small shop to purchase butterfly knick knacks.

Fun activity for family outing.

A fun activity for a family outing. Kids will enjoy spotting all the butterflies and learning about their life cycle. Parents will also enjoy the activity.

The staff (I presume owner?) was very welcoming and hospitable. The building is a little shabby and could be better but that doesn't detract from the visit. All in all a good family fun event.
