The church, which perhaps dates back to 1084 as per the Greek inscription preserved in Locri, is a notable Byzantine building although built after the consolidation of Norman power and stands in the lower part of the town, in Piazza della Repubblica.
Some excavations carried out in its surroundings have brought to light several ossuaries, various ceramics and decorated stuccoes from the 12th century.
Adjacent to the main entrance there are the remains of the ancient apse positioned to the East but in 1480, in the transition from the Greek to the Latin rite, the modification of the three-nave plan of the Norman age took place, with a different plan and the breaking of the roof to take advantage of the rooms below as ossuaries.
The church was damaged by the 1908 earthquake, while internally the structure is covered in 20th century polychrome plaster and the bell tower has a square tower.
