Pretty spot

The Niederburg castle is actually a ruin but worth a visit. It‘s very affordable and very interesting to walk within the walls and around the remains of the ancient castle. It does tell its own story. Quite romantic to be honest.

Nice castle
Feb 2017 • Couples
The castle only has limited opening hours and can be closed when weather isn't good. It was closed when we were there.
Nevertheless, we enjoyed the walk around the castle. From the parking lot, we walked up the Rittersteig. Because of the rainy weather, we only walked up until we had a great view on the castle (and also on the Oberburg, which lays a bit higher).
Don't hesitate to visit Manderscheid if you like a walk. If you're going for a visit of the castle, just be prepared it can be closed.

Hours of historical wonder.

Niederburg castle is very large and extensive in scope. I was worn out after a day of hiking and asorbing the historical past style of living and life struggles of the German people. The responsibility of the Castle owner to protect the village people that lived and worked on the out side of the castle. In time of attack the villagers would come inside for protection as well as the men may assist in providing support in the battle that may take place.

We went every year during the medieval fair. It was fun dressing up and being with so many other people dressed in Period costumes.

Beautiful romantic ruins

Our visit was in winter, and our view of it very similar to the picture. Fog swirled around it constantly changing the light and the atmosphere. Just beautiful!

The Castle

We went on a weekday while everyone was at work. It was wonderful to imagine what it must have been like back in the 900's. Go when it's not busy and it is a nice hour or two to spend.

I very much enjoyed these castles. The scenery was stunning. Explanations on the different rooms of the castle made this trip more enjoyable.

This the the more ruins with the most remaining. There is an entrance fee to see it, it is €2 for adults, and €1 for kids over 4. English brochures for €0.50. Bathrooms are free and outside the Kasse office. There is also a small cafe there as well. Walk back up the road, there is a sidewalk, and you'll get a great view of both of the ruins together, great photo spot. There is no parking down there you need to park at the top and either hike down via the other ruin path or walk down the road.
