We were driving from Frankfurt to Munich, and made the slight detour to see this church. We are so glad we did! We stepped from a charming church courtyard, complete with ancient carved tombstones, into the church's dim exterior. It's freezing cold in there, but the second our eyes caught sight of the altarpiece, we were unaware of such mundane considerations as temperature. The altar is just stunning. I stood there with dropped jaw for a long time before I could move. They did let me take photos as long as I disabled the camera's flash, and there was enough light to get a pretty decent picture (see attached). The rest of the church has some interesting artwork, and an interesting story of its founding, but clearly the main claim to fame is the altar. Gorgeous, inspired carving, whether of a disciple's face, billowing folds of a robe, or intricate patterned framework. If you can get there, go!

We knew the Thimble Museum didn't open until 10am, and found out when we arrived that the church doesn't open for tours until 9:30am, but the lady there let us in around 9:15. We walked around the church, checking out all the unusual and mostly old tombstones on both sides of the church. This church is world famous for its Marienaltar or Altar of the Virgin Mary. It was very impressive, being carved out of wood, standing 33 foot tool and very intricate, well worth the stop and the 2 Euros entry fee. There were several other large altar-like decorations, and the floor had intricately carved stones, some with ancient lettering.

Visited this church while driving the Romantic Road from Wurzburg to Fussen. This is a personal favourite and another under visited site. It is also known as The Church of our Lord.
It's my number one favourite church for the following reasons. It's located on the Romantic road, a cute and curvy road passing through wonderfully German towns and villages, pastures and country life.
Number two, the church has a masterpiece created by Tilman Riemenschneider. His Virgin Mary's Altar was and is an unbelievably detailed creation. The wood carved and sanded so smooth that it appears marble like. Mary's face pure and innocent, the 12 apostles standing guard. This work was completed around 1510.
Number three, the other altars are all amazingly carved, painted and beautiful. I especially found the High Altar in the rear of interest for it's worm holes and carved beauty. Few wooden sculptures survive due to the vulnerability to rot, insects and fire. These are masterpieces!
There is a small grave yard outside of the church. The parking is limited along the road but the church was not full while we visited. A small entrance fee of 2 Euro was requested but worth the contribution. Definitely a must see!
Apparently there are guided tours, unfortunately we missed it. Probably offered in German...

Creglingen is on the "Romantic Strasse" which goes from Würzburg to Füssen.
Travelling this route you pass through Creglingen with this wonderful church and its carved altar.
It is reputed that one of the small figures from Tilman Riemenschneider is in a New York museum and valued at $7 million.
The artist lived from 1460 till 1531 and this is recognised as his main work

We made a special trip to see the church. It was more beautiful than described. Such a unique exhibit. Definitely make a trip here. Even though they advertise no photos, you are allowed, just no flash or tripods. Highly recommended.

Starting to build the church in 1384 according to the legend, it is amazing that they added around 1500 this piece of wood carving by Tilman Riemenschneider from Würzburg. Great to see the artist himself in the right corner.
If you have half an hour in addition, I would recommend to walk through the village Creglingen, close to the church.

You would only stop at this rather tattered looking out of the way church to see Tilman Reimenschnieder's masterpiece wooden sculpture of Assumption of Mary if you're interested in sculptures. It's phenomenal. Not to be missed if you are passing through this town or if stopping nearby.

The unassuming-appearing church is the home of one of Riemanschneider's masterpieces: The Mariahimmelfahrt Altar (Ascension of Mary). The figures are carved on a large scale, and the overall impression is overwhelming. This is a "cannot miss" attraction , if in the area.

Went to the church to see a gorgeously carved Tilmann Riemenschneider altarpiece and found 3 more beautiful altarpieces on display, as well. Then, a couple miles down the road was the wonderful walled city of Creglingen.

The wooden altar by Tilman Riemenschneider is beautiful. I personally like his altar in St. Jacob's in Rothenburg better, but this one is also well worth the time to see.
