I visited Kalwaria as a daytrip from Krakow. It is better to go by bus then by train. From Krakow main bus station (Krakow Glowny) minibuses frequently go to Kalwaria. The ticket costed 7 Zlot. The bus station in Kalwaria is nearer to the sanctuary then train station. The sanctuary consists of the monastery and the chapels arranged in the surrounding area. I was there in January without snow. The pilgrimage routes were not very good marked and the paths were muddy, worn off and sometimes steep and slippy. So I did not manage to circle whole routes. The chapels were closed but it was mostly possible to see through the windows uninteresting interiors. The main attraction is the basilica with its beautiful interior. Besides, until the end of the January there was interesting nativity scene, made with many details and mobile mechanical parts.

Massive complex of buildings on hill above Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. Main part of it is a church basylica of Our Lady of the Angels, surrounded by countless numbers of big and small buildings making up for bernardine monastery. Always full with pilgrims and tourists. Parts, that are open to every day visitors are church and some parts of the courtyard. Apart from that, large building in outer courtyard serves as an accommodation buildin called Pilgrims House, also there's a few restaurants and caffes. Many parking spaces around, with the closest ones on the southern site of the monastery wall. Many pilgrims, after spending their time in basilica, do go out there to walk one of paths, that link 42 chapels spread over large area. There's two main paths, one of them called Paths of Our Lord, and the other is called Paths of Our Lady. These can be mixed and matched. But you need to be of good health to attempt them. In 1999 the whole complex has been inscribed onto Unesco's World Heritage List, and one year later, in 2000, it was named Pomnik historii (historical monument) - highest recognition in polish system of heritage protection.

A 45 minute bus ride from Krakow, and then 20 minutes on foot from the bus stop to the Sanctuary. The Monastery and its park was inserted in the world heritage list due to its Mannerist architecture set into a cultural and natural landscape. Built during the 17th century, along with other Calvary monasteries throughout Europe to counter the reformation, this was also modeled on the Calvary of Jerusalem. So after reaching the top of the hill, I entered the main church, the Basilica of St Mary. Built in the Baroque style by an Italian architect who was quite active in Poland, also building a church in Krakow, it holds a nice organ, a golden altar and a nicely decorated chapel. The site is a popular pilgrimage place and even though it was a wednesday there were still quite a few people around. The monastery around the church is still inhabited by several monks who were also heading out into the park for their daily walk. So after getting out of the church I headed further uphill and visited the various mannerist and baroque chapels scattered throughout the park

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a beautiful complex with the Basilica hosting Our Lady of Calvary. We visited in April and decided to try and follow the Pathways of Our Lady. We went down the hill and found a couple of chapels opened through its windows, but the rest were closed. The area is definitely serene and peaceful. We got lost trying to follow its path so we decided to return back. I would imagine this place is filled with pilgrims during the summer! The concept of the two Pathways is amazing and if time permits, it sounds like a wonderful experience to enjoy!

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a big religious sanctuary located in the middle of a mountain. There also is marked a path in the mountain, where you can follow the diferent stages of calvary. It is a very interesting excursion, where you can enjoy with nature and the colopurs of the forest, especially in Autumn, if you are not a religious person.

it is a worth visit to this sanctuary! You can do a lot of things here so be sure to go up and down the hills! The church is amazing so as the whole surroundings. An ideal location for spiritual experience that leaves you a feeling of staying more time. We had a mass in one of their chapel and met some of their priests. I think this place is best if you want to stay for overnight and atleast spend your 2 days going around the place.

If you want serenity this is the place. The sweeping view of the countryside is breathtaking. The monastery/semenary grounds is definitely and an excellent place for meditation and praying. I wish we had a whole day here to be able to wander the grounds.

If you have that extra half day or so, do make an effort to visit this place. I am by no means a religious person or a fan of the Church, but this place has an ethereal energy all around that makes you just want to stay in the area for as long as possible. And I am not referring to just the chapel or the sanctuary alone, but the entire surrounding area, the hills, the forests, the walking paths. It is an ideal location for a spiritual experience.

It felt VERY holy just to be here!!!
Amazing church, several gift shops, the "restaurant" is pitiful-- be SURE to bring food!!
Climb the BIG hill!! You will see the buildings with the last 3 stations of the cross:
Jesus died
Jesus taken down from the cross
Jesus laid in the tomb

I would highly recommend!!

I'm not a religious person, maybe that's why I'm not enchanted with the sanctuary. Or maybe I've seen too many more interesting church buildings to be impressed by Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. From the point of view of an ordinary tourist, it's not a must-see.
