Our landlady recommended this place as it’s a nice shaded walk and easy for kids - have to say it was so beautiful especially with the river and rock formation - felt so cool on a hot day like today. The whole walk took 2 hours and at the end, we walked back to the starting point on the road for 20 mins. We stopped by the Caramanico town for a quick lunch - highly recommended!

I have included pictures of the bridge and where to go down to get to this great River gorge, please veiw. To get here you will need to head towards Caramanico Terme, on the SS 487 road. The place that you want to park is a parking lay by on the SS 487 road about 1.2 km before Caramanico Terme, and just before the bridge that spans the gorge. Parking here for about 20 cars and never busy and free. Once parked you need to cross the road and walk 20 metres to the start of the bridge and you will see the entrance to your left with steps and a mountain path going downwards. It is steep in some areas with many steps however this path will take you to the base of the river and the walkways and small wooden bridges that cross the mountain river and some fantastic waterfalls. A 20 minute hike along the path going upstream will take you to the third small wooden bridge that spans the river and a medium River waterfall. The gorge rises high above you on both sides and the water is crystal clear. Stunning walk. Take a picnic. Good trainers needed and also a hiking stick is advised. Isolated so take all that you will need.

We walked down into the gorge this summer and it was absolutely beautiful. You must check in as a visitor at the museum. The entrance is free but the guide will give you maps and explaint he trails to you. It is a one to two hour walk depending on how much you loiter. Very shady. You cannot swim in the river - it is very cold and fast. You could bathe your legs. The descent from the other end - not the museum but the roadside parking lot - is steep but safe unless you are prone to vertigo or you have balance problems. There are only a few handrails.

Unfortunately, we left from the museum, walked through the gorge, ascended the stairs leading up to the parking lot on the side of the road, then had to walk back to our car via the road, or retrace our steps back through the gorge which made our walk too long and hot. A better way would have been to check in at the museum, and then go ten minutes down the road and park at the roadside parking, walk down as far as we wanted to along the gorge, and then walk back the way we came to our car. The descent from the museum path into the gorge is not particularly special so I do not recommend descending that way. If you plan to exit back through the museum path, make sure the gate on the path will be open when you return. We were warned the gate was closing when we started our walk. That meant we had to walk along the road through the village to get to the museum parking lot and get our car. That made it hot and frustrating but only due to our bad planning!

Wow - what an experience. Caramanico Terme is a small but busy hilltop town, but it has a wonderful secret, the Valley of Orfento. We had to get permission to visit - actually a very easy procedure (just make sure you have proof of identity), and then we set off. The walks are very well signposted with suggested times to various points on the gorge. Higher up the valley is beautiful, but as you approach the town, the gorge deepens and there are waterfalls and many bridges crossing the river/stream. It is dark, quite dank but wonderfully atmospheric and photogenic (the camera got used a LOT!). We went in high season and closer to the town it was relatively busy by Abruzzo standards. I would highly recommend.

Fantastic to walk the three hours tour from Centro Visita through the woods and the beautiful waterfalls and lake. We ate lunch by the beautiful water, and cooled down our feets. Recommend this tour.

We walked through this beautiful gorge with our 3 children, ages 10,7,3.5 (the small one was some of the time on a backpack). We parked our car at the parking bay on road ss487 before crossing the bridge and entering the town of Caramanico Terme. We then went down to the gorge. It is not a long walk (15 min.) until you reach the river. The walk along the river is beautiful and calm, very easy to everyone. Nice little waterfalls, and always the lovely sound of the water. We then went uphill towards the visitor center of the valley, in Caramanico Terme, and planned on getting back by foot to our car. But then, what began as light rain when we were still walking, turned into pouring rain, a real flood, which just went stronger and stronger every minute. We were lucky to already be protected by the visitor center's roof, but we still had to walk a few Km back to our car... To our rescue came Salvatore, the person in charge of the visitor center, who gave the all 5 of us a ride back to our car in the pouring rain. Grazie mille Salvatore!! For us it was one of our best experiences from our trip to Abruzzo. We will remember it always. Beautiful hike in an amazing valley and precious people.

Beautiful stream, waterfalls, and scenery. The creek/stream/river is small but winds down down the steep ravine. At times the hiking path is right near the edge and a steep ravine. If you were to fall off the path it would be a long time before you stopped! It's not a hard hike, but the signs show distances that are not accurate. The views from both sides of the ravine were great. We had a great time and would recommend highly!

Thanks for your review, the numbers you saw indicated on the signposting stand for the estimated duration of the trails, never distances.

The Cicerone guide Walking in Abruzzo recommended this. We did a short walk (about 1 hour) before lunch. Shady, well signposted, helpful instructions at the visitor centre. Really beautiful and not many other people there.

One of the most spectacular sights in the Park - well worth the walk - which you can be shortened if need be. Also worth a visit to the Park Centre nearby.
