We found this stave church a rather new and well maintained one with a unique architecture in Germany. Inside it has a wooden structure typical to the stave church. The town itself is also lovely to walk around after seeing the church. However compared to the stave churches in Norway we think this one is less impressive both architecturally and historically.

A piece of Scandinavia in the Harz mountains, built mainly for the tourist trade in the early 20th century. Well worth a visit. Go for an organ recital, if you can.

We came late in the afternoon, shortly before closing time. It was a surprising first impression when we stepped up to the church in the sun light. We had seen this type of church in Norway and seeing it here in the mountainous and wooded hills of the "Harz" it looked perfectly right in place. We admired the structure and the inside even more. It looks plain but special at the same time because of the carvings and the sparse use of colour. It was also a treat to be there by ourselves which made it a very spiritual experience. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this church. A donation of 2 Euro is certainly a well worth support for this unique building!
