- AlbertSalichsManresa, Spain22,068 contributionsWonderful and very well preserved fortressKlis Fortress is located in the little town called Klis, near one of the main cities in Dalmatia Region: Split. It is a full complex very well preserved, where you can see some of the walls, towers and rooms of this Middle Ages Fortress. It is a wonderful place, where you really feel this period of time. Also, it is a very important place, because the origin of the Croatian country is here. You can walk around all fortress, learn about the history, visit a lot of rooms and a church and see very nice views of the surroundings. Very recommendable!Visited October 2022Traveled with friendsWritten September 20, 2023

- Shubhank RishiMumbai, India60 contributionsMUST FOR ALL GOT FANSIf you’re a GOT fan, this place should definitely be on your list. Though they just shot a part of season 5 here but the full castle shouts MHYSA. We didn’t take a guide or tour & it didn’t affect much. Due to the size of the castle, all of the locations are on the face. Almost all the locations are still the same except one, where they have made a stage and sitting stands but the rest of the castle is still fun. A MUST VISITVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 10, 2023

By the entrance you receive a nice map with descriptions of the spots to visit on the tour. Would highly recommend.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 19, 2023

As well as playing a crucial role in Game Of Thrones as Meereen City, Klis Fortress played a crucial role in defending the territory of Split for centuries - most notably the 1532 Battle Of Klis, which is re-enacted every year in the last weekend of July. An interesting place, worth visiting, but I thought the fortress is much bigger. Of course, I recommend it to anyone who has watched the series.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 16, 2023
- Brooklet425Staunton, Virginia295 contributionsInteresting PlaceKlis Fortress initially caught my attention because of Game of Thrones, but it was a really interesting place beyond that. There's a small museum type area in one of the rooms that details the hundreds of years of history of the fortress, which was really interesting to learn about. The only complaint I had was the lack of signage. Yes, there was a detailed history of the fortress in general, but as we walked around I wondered what specific rooms and area of the fortress were specifically for. That's information that I've been able to find easily at other castles/fortifications that I've visited. That being said though, I think this is a must-see place if you're in Split. Aside from the history, the view from the top is beautiful.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 9, 2023
- AMD907Anchorage, Alaska341 contributionsBeautiful viewFrom the castle there is a beautiful view of Split and the surrounding area. On a clear day this is a must do for the area. There is not much inside and minimal displays but it is worth a visit. If you're going just for the views, it takes under an hour. If you're interested in reading the displays, an hour and a half is probably a good time estimate.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 10, 2024
- Steven LenhardMarietta, Georgia19 contributionsVery well preserved fortressIt was easy to take a €15 Uber ride from our hotel to the fortress. We spent about 75 minutes exploring the fortress. I would be very careful for older people. The footing is not very easy. Some of the stones can be quite slippery. But it was an exceptional display of an ancient fortress. Some scenes from the show Game of Thrones were filmed here. Being so high up on the hill, this provided spectacular views of the city of Split in the distance.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 18, 2024
- Karen L27 contributionsGlad we wentWe enjoyed the fortress, but when we were there, there was no one to guide us through the history of it. We enjoyed recognizing some of the Game of Thrones filming spots, but wished there was more references to it. It is open to explore all around - which was really cool. Amazing history there - a true fortress that has seen a lot! If walls could talk! We would definitely recommend this spot and also the Olive Oil museum (which came with our entrance purchase at the fortress).Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 15, 2024

The fortress was good, interesting to see and great views across the whole of Split. There are a couple of cafes in the huddle of houses just below the fortress. We got the number 22 bus there no problem €3 each one way (they don’t do a return and it’s zone 2 so the Split city pass of zone 1 doesn’t cover it), however the 22 in April at least doesn’t go often. We walked to another bus stop to get other buses and they never arrived. It took us two hour wait to get a bus. We found were two other couples in the same boat wandering around and if the next bus didn’t come we were going to share a taxi back to Split. So the fortress was worth a visit but make sure you’re aware of the buses and can get there and back ok!

If I have an option to rate their staff - I would give her zero, Yes, the view is impressive but for someone like me who has fear of heights, I don’t find it enjoyable every time I go high up,
I visited the fortress with my partner. I thought I should at least try to go in. After purchasing the tickets, I walked approx 100 meters from the ticket booth. And finding it distressing. My anxiety increased so I turned back and exit through the ticket booth.
I explained to the young lady at ticket booth, that I felt uncomfortable and my fear began to take over. I asked if I could get a refund €10. I barely went into the fortress to explore. I was literally 4 mins in and straight out. The lady refused to offer me a refund. I felt this is so unfair, if I’ve been inside for longer period then fair enough no refund. And furthermore, I’ve a fair reason which I felt she should consider and make an exception.
I didn’t argued and left. I waited at the base for my partner while he explore the fortress.
I never ever write bad reviews, but for this, I felt they just want your money and don’t really care how you feel.
I’m very disappointed. Wasted my €10 and wish the staff could be more understanding and flexible.

The village of Klis is home to an imposing medieval fortress, perched high in the mountain pass of Kozjak and Mosor overlooking the city of Split. It was the seat of many Croatian kings and served as part of Split’s defense against the Ottoman invasion during the 16th century.
The Klis fortress was under attack for 20 years in the wars between the Venetians and the Ottomans. Established under the ancient Illyrians, developed by the Romans, strengthened by the Venetians, tested by the Ottomans, and most recently, a set for the Game of Thrones (season 4 filmed in 2013).
When Daenerys Targaryen reaches Meereen with her army, people from Meereen looked down on her from the high walls of Klis fortress. Daenerys later seized the city, freed the slaves and punished the rulers by nailing them to crosses for all to see.

Very big disappointment. We visited the Fortress in April, So maybe it was not ready for the season, but i had imptession it's all under construction. This place has a great potential, but i'm not sure if the construction Goes into right ditection.. The pipes, cables are not hiden, the "interactive" part is actually a tablet with copy paste of some Old school book aparat from the fact that the building housing So called interactive part was all full of the scent of toilet that was on the ground floor. To me price of the entrance is too high comparing to what you find inside. To find some positive, Views from the place are of course very nice.

DO NOT GO THERE. It's literally so hard to get to by bus (few buses with long time waiting periods). There is a beautiful view but it is not worth the time or money. Do not spend 10 euros on a castle that has mostly been re-done. There are absolutely no Game pf Throne references within the "Castle". No signs for directions within the "castle" so you easily can get stuck or find yourself in a dead end. Most of it is outside in the glazing sun (no great if the temperature is over 30 degrees). The was one small "insode part" that As completely empty. Just white walls. We have paid 10 euros (and about 8 in transportation) as well as spending over 4 hours (including transport) being miserable and unsatisfied.

In looking at how to get there, it seemed hard to get there by buses and expensive by taxi. Thankfully we had a hire car so we went to Klis fortress on our way out of Split on our journey to Plitvice lakes. The trip up the hill and the turn of to the road to get to the castle was easy to follow, but the turn off to car park wasn't signed really well so we drove past it and had to do a U-turn to get back to it.
It was free to park in and not busy so we got a spot easily. We were there early as well.
There is a short walk up a paved path to the castle entrance. We had to wit about 15 minutes after the opening time as the ticket office lady was late getting to work there. The cost was 10 euro each, which was a little more than it was worth but still not outrageous. The view back down to Split while waiting was excellent.
There was toilets in the barracks building so that was handy.
Once we got in, it was a multi level with tracks and stairs leading to various areas.
There wasn't to much to see but it was an excellent fortress with amazing history and stunning views back down to Split.
Well worth the trip out if you have a hire car.

Fortress Klis is amazing. Built on a narrow ridge it commands sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Easy climb up from the parking lot. Some interesting rooms and chapel with a brochure in English to explain everything. There is an interactive devise on one walkway that if you are a Game of Thrones fan you can get your picture taken with flying dragons. Several buses run from Split to Fortress Klis. I took the #1 because I wanted to stop at the Salona Roman ruins. I then changed buses in Solin and the #22 took me directly, last stop, to Fortress Klis. Travel time without the Roman ruins stop approx. 30 min. Check the bus schedules as there are two different bus stations in Split for departure and arrival. Your entry ticket also lets you visit the Olive Museum "Stella Croatica" in Klis.

This is a pretty cool partially ruined fortress outside of Split. There is a small museum on site with some interesting information in English and Croatian as well as some great views of Split and the surrounding area. Don't forget to get some lunch in the small village at the foot of the hill. The restaurant there is well known for their lamb.

how strenuous walking are these tours @ Kliss Fortress
Written February 22, 2020
we did an UBER from town. I would rate it as easy for a fit adult and challenging for a child or an elderly person. I would keep a close eye on any children if I were hiking in this area. Many drop offs without barriers.

If I get a taxi there are the taxis available outside the fortress to get back to Split old town?

Hi
How frequent is the 22 bus please? Is it quite regular?
Written April 22, 2019
In fact I do not know the regularity because, in fact, it depends on the season. On summer time you have more buses..

I have been told by the tourist board that I can get the number 22 bus from Solin to Klis. Does anyone know where the bus drops you off, is it anywhere near the fortress? If not how far is the walk from Klis to the Fortress or can you get a taxi up to it?Thanks in advance.

The bus will drop you off near the fort. It’s about 100m to the site entrance.

Written August 6, 2018
You can easily spend a couple of hours here and if you research them you can find the areas used in filming of the series but also could get round it quickly if you wished. We went round twice just to make sure we took everything in. Enjoy your visit.

Is there parking here for my rental car?
Written April 29, 2017
There is a big enough parking place nearby, we left our cars there, there was no problem or incident. I honestly believe it is safe for you or anyone to leave the car there. We had our own car, Romanian number and Hungarian number, nothing happened. The whole visit took and hour and a half as we were a group of 12 and took a looot of pictures. If you don't leave it there over night, you shouldn't worry.

Hi There. How was access up to the castle for the average 70 year old?

I think it would be fine as there aren't very many steps! The entrance is more of a hill and you could walk around the fortress at your own pace :)
