This site is a little off the beaten path in terms of tourists sites on the island, but I think it was one of the best we visited. You can catch a bus in Iraklio that will drop you off right at the site, so...More

6€ per person to spend 15 minutes into ruins with no more explanations. Not worth it in our opinion.

There are remains of human habitation here from the end of the Bronze Age until the C7th AD. It is a big site. The main reason for visiting is to see the C5th BC law code which deals with topics such as property, slavery &...More

Compared with other Cretan archaeological sites this is very poor value for money. The cost is 6euros, the church of Saint Titos is not accessible due to restoration work, which leaves only the Odeon (indoor Roman theatre) and Law Code (written on large stone tablets)...More

Let me firstly qualify my title to this review. A couple of days prior to this we visited Aptera, which regardless of having a cheaper entrance fee was of more interest. The entrance fee for this site is 6 euros which is about right for...More

Went to many ruins sites in Crete, this was really the only let-down. WC/restroom facilities were abysmal, and the site is very small with not very much to see compared to other sites. Skip, go to Malia, Phaistos, Knossos instead.

It might not be a dominant site like the Acropolis or reconstructed like the Palace of Knossos but the archaeological site at Gortyn is outstanding. The plain of Messara is located in the centre of Crete. That, in itself, is unremarkable. The plain of Messara...More
