The promontory began to be inhabited before the tenth century by peasants who began to build an enclosure first in wood and then in brick. Transformed into a castle and noble residence of the Viscontis from the thirteenth to the fourteenth century.
It then passed to the Sforza in the following century. With Ludovico il Moro (1452 - 1508) the castle is completed and will be modified in the following centuries with the addition of staircases which were later demolished and the construction of the cavalry

nice to walk in Leonardo and the Sforza's places but the castle itself does not have much to see inside (except a Leonardo museum) but the fantastic Strada Coperta (the covered entrance to the castle it's worth the visit...and it is free.

Place itself was fantastic, but the African bracelet guys are really aggressive. There's a group right outside the entrance that harrass tourists. One grabbed my wrist, tied a bracelet and started demanding money. I tried to back off, but he had a strong grip on my wrist and was very aggressively asking for more money. He started grabbing for my bag so I ended up giving about 50 euro just to get him away from me. Beautiful place, but not safe for tourists.

It felt as if I stepped back in time. More than a castle, this was what they called a weekender back on those days - I say this as fortification is minimum.

This is a great place just behind the magic Piazza Ducale. Inside the castle you have many historical place to visit including the shoe museum and a small art gallery of local painters from 16th century.

A huge space which seems to have a variety of free exhibitions just to fill it up. It is a nice space and seems to be used like a public park. It seems well kept except for the toilets with were a hole in the floor with no toilet paper or warm water or soap.

This is in walking distance from The Last Supper, I spent my time here as I waited for my entry. The grounds are beautiful and there are a number of museums & displays throughout and many have nothing to do with the castle itself or the family.
There is a nominal fee for a guided audio tour of the grounds and it was worth it, for me. The entrance fee gives you access to a number of museums Egyptian, Swords, Musical instruments, Ceramics ... choose the subjects that appeals to you because you may not get through them all.
There is a nice little cafe to eat on the grounds and the prices are affordable. There are beautiful gardens and a number of castle cats that roam around.

Enjoyed walking through the grounds and around the castle. No fee unless you visit the many museums. Also there is a public toilet for those in need. The castle leads into a large lovely park on one side and a beautiful fountain on the other. Near the fountain was a guy selling and making churros and empanadas which were very tasty! There are a few panhandlers and folks trying to sell bracelets etc, but we had no problems after firmly saying no or ignoring them altogether - no eye contact- was never afraid just irritated.

A beautiful castle! Well preserved with loads of interesting nooks and crannies to visit. A huge park at the back to walk through. Interesting history.
