The Benque Viejo House of Culture is worth a stop if you are in the area. The dedicated staff are committed to preserving the unique culture of Benque Viejo. It is clearly a labor of love. I visited twice during the Los Finados celebrations (Day of the Dead) and the two staff persons were eager to spend time with me explaining that holiday as well as its music projects ( a develoiping marimba group). The House of Culture is small and has limited space. It is in the former police station. That being said, the H of C makes a good first stop in Benque. They can provide you with information about other places to visit and about the history as well as the current conditions in this small town.

We visited two weeks before Easter, to find the House of Culture immersed in preparing colorful sawdust for Benque's “sawdust carpet” creations. Months of preparation go into designing the artwork that will cover several of Benque's streets each year during Holy Week, the week that precedes the festival of Easter. Artists use wooden stencils to create the intricate designs. The designs themselves use fine, colored sawdust. Religious processions then pass through the carpeted streets, quickly reducing the work to dusty memories. A small sample can be found inside the House of Culture. Just don't turn on the overhead fan!
Other items include a costume used in ceremonial dance, and a beautiful old marimba, a musical instrument developed by African slaves.
The delightful curator is happy to show visitors around, and is justifiably proud of the little museum.

I stopped in again at the little -- and I do mean little -- Benque House of Culture on a recent visit to Cayo. Currently, there's a wonderful rosewood and mahogany marimba (sort of like a big xylophone) on display. The curator is very knowledgeable and helpful. The museum is free but donations are welcome.

Benque is the town in Cayo that has tons of culture. The House of Culture has events every month. They also work with local artists, and you can get the tickets for Poustinia, the art park there. They are right on Centennial Park, and on many weekends they have productions in the park. Everything from movies to concerts to marimba to steel pan drumming. Tonight, by coincidence, they are starting a lecture series where historians come in and talk about how Benque came to be.

Great spot, and I'll be going back soon.

If you are ever in Benque Viejo, this place is worth a short visit. They usually have an exhibit of some sort, and the very friendly ladies who work there are quite knowledgeable about the small town.

This is a quaint and wonderful little museum in Benque Viejo. We heard the sounds of the youth marimba band playing from the street. Music to our ears! The musicians were very good and are attending a Marimba Music Festival in Costa Rica this year. Great cultural attraction in Benque Viejo - the town should be proud of these kids.
