I discovered Atariki Diving Centre by accident on a walk from Hanga Roa up to Rano Kau. It's only about five minutes from the south end of Hanga Road in a little harbour. Marcos speaks English thankfully as I don't speak Spanish.

He explained that the Island's diving is determined by the weather and the direction and strength of the wind. I asked him lots of questions about why he couldn't say which site we would be diving at until the morning of the dive and he was happy to explain. Fair enough.

We visited the underwater Maoi and also dived Rana Kai with more fish etc. Both highly recommended. They do snorkelling too but sadly we didn't have enough time.

I found the team refreshingly laid back and I didn't feel rushed and shoehorned into a schedule. They were all very professional and I would highly recommend Atariki to anyone, whether an advanced diver or new and would like to learn.

The 1st evening I was on the island I looked around on the main wharf and saw the "Tourist" dive shops. What a pleasant surprise when I was taken to this place the next day. All in Spanish, but fun down to earth adventurous divers. Left the best to last, a dive through the cave and tunnels of "The Cathedral". One minute finning against the ebb of the sea, the next catapulted through the tunnels with the surge of the sea.
Lot of hard coral, great visibility, a lot of Trumpet fish and the odd school of fish. Turtles. A great experience, great people, great diving.

I went to the main drag and took a look at the diving places for tourists...were charging around 40$ more for the same offering. This place yes, is only in spanish but super professional and super friendly owned and operated by locals.

Very poor customer service starting from Marcos the manager, instrutors were not any better. Poor communication about the dive, equipment and procedures and I even speak Spanish. I had to translate for others and provide more information about what was happening.

The dive was good (did the Moai), equipment was very good, so I guess if you are only after hiring equipment this place is ok.

By the way to cap it all I was promised pictures of the dive and upon arrival to collect the pictures they said they had taken none.

Truly the bluest dive I've ever done. The colour seemed almost photoshopped! Easily 30m visibility. Quite amazing. And the underwater Moai is a bit of fun too - make sure you have an underwater camera of some kind!

As I dived Christmas Eve and it was the only day I could dive due to flights, I had no choice but to go with Atariki, due to everywhere being full. I paid 40,000pesos per dive (~$80aud/dive), and they were 5-10,000 pesos more than every other place I visited. Being Christmas Eve and due to my desperation I couldn't really negotiate though. In saying this, their equipment was fine, and they were gracious enough to give me a new tank altogether when I told them my o-ring was old and the air was leaking. Be aware they have a "transbank" sign on the window to imply they take card, but their machine appears to be nonexistent/permanently broken.. So be prepared to pay in cash. The plus side of not being on of the two top rated dive centers on trip advisor Meant that I was one of two divers that day. This meant for longer dives, quicker starts and less hassle and wait for pictures with the Moai - can't complain!
Either way, if you dive and you're in Easter Island - tick it off your list!!

We chanced upon Atariki dive center on our way from a seafood restaurant close by. And what a lucky chance it was. Though the dive center is under renovation and a first floor cafe is being built, it was still in good shape. And then we came upon Shelby. She is an amazing dive master. Firstly, because she could speak to us in English, that was a plus.

My friend, who has never been in sea water, was very nervous before the dive. Shelby's clear instructions were very helpful. When my friend took the plunge, he was still very apprehensive. But Shelby remained with him all through above the water, calming him and encouraging him at the same time. And then he did go under water with her and is now so hooked to the idea of diving that he has planned two more trips to Easter island this year and then towards the end of the year wants to take a few week's break from work to spend time there diving daily and learning from Shelby, the master. Thank you Shelby and team. You are awesome!!
