The historic round tower has been closed for years so it wasn't a surprise to us on this occasion (our fourth visit to the island) that there was no access. There was scaffolding surrounding it so works must be ongoing. It is located at a cliff overlooking the sea and a long stretch of beach so it's still worth walking the short distance from the southern end of town if you're visiting El Cotillo. In the past entry was subject to a small fee payable only by card.
There are a few old lime kilns in the area too and access down to the very long sandy beach (Playa del Castillo) where there are usually plenty of surfers and wind surfers. It's nice there for a stroll if you don't fancy going into the sea. Refreshments available in the town.

We stayed at Correlejo but decided to take the local bus to El Cotillo on the other side of the island. It was a good decision because it only cost €3.10 and gave us a chance to see the countryside and the magnificent volcanoes. Once there, initially it seemed as if there was nothing to see but as we wandered around we found this old fortification. It was closed but it didn’t matter because the area is stunning. Cliff top views, rugged, wild scenery and the old fishing village of El Cotillo made it really interesting afternoon out.

Basically a big tower stuck in the middle of nowhere on a dirt track, It's locked but every now and again a tour bus stops and they get out to have their photos.

This is a small structure. Why is this a fort is the answer I will neither seek nor find anytime soon.

Not a lot to see here. No interaction in English from the staff. But for €1.50 well worth the look. They only take credit card no cash accepted. stunning views across the beach from here.

We have been here before, many years ago, but it was not open then. We went in and was a bit surprised by the entry fee by card, but we were inside so thought 'why not'. Looked at the little art exhibition and then went into the little rooms and up to the top. Great view, liked the art, but would not have been practical to buy any to take back on the plane. If I was a local, I may have done! Glad we went in.
Go down to the little harbour, you can watch the waders running around after peoples food! You get a good view looking up from there.

Unlike another reviewer, we weren't asked to leave, we were locked in! An interesting tale to tell, but a little disconcerting that the lady didn't check the tiny building of 3 rooms before she went off to the post office. She spoke to us when she saw us struggling with the steep steps to the turret, so was well aware of our ascent, and lack of descent. I can only imagine how important the parcel must have been to do this. We had no idea how long she would be gone for, we hailed people below to try and unlock the door, but they couldn't. We were told that she probably went to lunch and would be back at 3. So with that in mind I started to search the phone and iPad left there for contact numbers, with no joy. She did come back, 20 minutes later, slightly apologetic, and it could be my imagination but I got the impression she was looking around to see if we'd stolen anything while she was gone rather than give us our money back, which would have been more appropriate. Alls well that ends well, it was luckily not a 3 hour lock in, but do beware if you visit. Funny in retrospect.

Great place to walk around to the fort, the beach and eat well at one of the many great seafood restaurants.

One of the beautiful viewpoints of Fuerventura. It's just next to center of El Cotillo so don't miss it.

I can't help you there I know I went in the afternoon of a week day and it was open, but we could not look inside as we only had CASH and for some bizarre reason you can only pay by CARD so make sure you have a card with you to pay in.
