I just liked this church. Round, modelled on the Pantheon in Rome it is just so unusual. From the outside, like the Pantheon it's really quite plain. But internally this just had a certain beauty in its main altar, four large alcoves serving as ornate and poignant side altars and a few small alcoves. And as a circular church it just worked, a serene charm and appeal.

The "Inglesia de la Encarnación", in the center of the beautiful town of Montefrio... you cannot ignore it! This church was built in the period 1786-1802. It consists of a large main building in the shape of a circle, covered by a huge domed roof. Behind the church, a much smaller rectangular building with church tower. This church was designed after the famous Panthéon of Agrippa in Rome, dating from around 125 AD. The church, which is difficult to see due to its location among narrow buildings, is best admired from above, from the hill on which the Moorish fort once stood. The beautiful roof in particular then comes into its own. Very special church.

An amazing and beautiful building : the dome is truly stunning !
Outside, look up and see all the house martins' nest hard up against the projecting eaves !
Such a large and impressive church for a relatively small town.
Montefrio itself is a lovely unspoilt town, almost without tourists so prices are low and food and drink plentiful and reasonably priced compared to the cities nearby.

It’s a very very beautiful little village and it’s calm lazy ( perhaps not during the olive time! ) and there are a very historical plaze from the 14th century - lots of small streets - good for walking. You have to go to the top to the church - it’s marvellous!

The Iglesia de la Encarnacion with its round dome and Neo-Classical design really stands out in the centre of the town but its also well worth climbing up the hill Iglesia de la Villa is a very different Gothic church from the 16th Century.
Its well worth having a good walk around the town as there are excellent views but the walk up to the castle is quite demanding.

Montefrio is an amazing place. A picturesque town built on a hill with two churches - one on top of the hill and another, this one lower down. This church was built between 1786 and 1802 and designed by the architect Domingo Lois de Monteagudo. It was inspired by the Agrippa Pantheon in Rome. The church is round with a diameter of 30 metres and has amazing acoustics. Definitely a place to make a visit.

We found this church next to the restaurant we were going to visit. This is the first time i have ever seen a round church. If you are in the area it is well worth a visit. Public Free parking is only 200 yards away.

What are the typical visiting hours for this church? Which days of the week is it open?
