I went here around 7 pm, and ofc it's already closed. But you still can take pictures from outside. And later on I found out there are few possibilities to get in without the entrance fee. This is illegal, I didn't do it but I saw some people did. So the choice is yours.

This abbey ruin is special for its composition and size. It is really big due to its composite structure. There is the more recent part with the partly intact buildings and there is the large abbey terrain with the abbey itself and multiple other buildings and churches. There is a well indicated walking route through the place and it is not too crowded. However, outside the premises it is pretty touristic. We had no idea where everyone went to though. Perhaps the midget golf or the restaurants around it?

In my opinion, Abbaye d'Aulne and the Abbey of Villers-la-Ville are the two abbeys in ruins most worthy of a visit. Ensure the weather is good though since its mostly an outdoor activity of course. They offer great photo opportunities as well. Sometimes activities such as concerts are planned around here, worth a check. Thuin itself offers a few other attractions to do, so worth a stay for a (long) weekend in summer.

Just the right mix of romanticism and history in this site where the ruins of the once proud and big abbey of Aulne are to be found. Still not very well known and a bit off the beaten track. There is almost no info on sit, and the spoiled tourist might not like it, it is all a bit old fashioned and basic, but what a nice place (almost allways very calm too). Could be developed into a beautiful garden, but somehow it all fits together, I like it a lot. There is a brewery on site, you can sample its goods at the back of the abbey, some of them are great. Nice place to sit too.

This is a fun place to explore. I always find abbeys interesting but it is only while walking through the ruins of one that you can actually see how grand they actually are. Intact walls, hidden nooks and other ruins give you a glimpse of what life was like here. A tip: skip the onsite cafe because their menu is so limited and visit one of the other cafes outside of the abbey walls.
