Be sure to get the combo ticket that allows for entry to this museum and the one in Peronne. Both are very well done. Bring hands free headphones for your cell phone and you can use the free wifi to then scan the QR codes in the museum which feature actors in period gear telling the stories of what happened here (i.e. Battle of the Somme). There's a gift shop on site as well as bathrooms and snack machines. You can visit the Thiepval monument as well afterwards.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 25, 2023

That said this museum, given its modest size, is excellent. As with most museums is gives the facts and figures and has some personal artifacts etc... but what made this museum truly memorable was the panoramic mural of the first day. The mural depicts the harrowing day of 1 July 1916, hour after hour. Reproduced onto 60 metres of back-lit glass, it provides a panoramic view of the battlefield, a graphic narrative of military operations. insofar as portraying the story of 1 July 2016 is is fantastic (if something showing events so awfull can be described as such). Following the events via the tableau is to be taken from the optimism and preparation to the abject horror of the aftermath via the maelstrom of the battle. This kind of story is so so difficult to portray this does it brilliantly. The sister museum at Perrie is sterile and clinical - something akin to an art gallery and if you have been here I possibly wouldnt bother going there as it lacks context - its clean and airy and nice and as I said like an art gallery. This galleryhere however is stunning and is a surprising highlight of our visit to The Somme.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 3, 2024
- Karl S74 contributionsMagnificent MemorialThis is a magnificent memorial to those lost at WW1 battles of the Somme. 72000 names of those lost during the conflict who have know known grave. The scale of the memorial mirrors the scale of loss. It is a very emotive & thought provoking place & is somewhere I will never forget. The visitor centre adjacent to the car park is also worth a visit to get more context & history. We will remember them.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 22, 2024

Although we did not go into the paid exhibition space of the museum, the free display in the lobby of the museum offers excellent and informative text and images of the Battle of the Somme. The staff are friendly as well. Well worth a visit.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 24, 2024

I was surprised at how well presented I found the information in this small museum. The 15 minute film is excellent, and (against my expectations) I also enjoyed the sketches covering the two walls. The seem crude at first glance, but I felt they gave a more rounded and effective picture of the action than I’d seen in other exhibits. I suggest visitors also visit other museums in the area as well, but the introductory film made this one a must-see for me.

We stayed in Perrone which has a museum to the Great War in the old fort and booked the ticket which gave us access to Thiepval too. The monument is currently undergoing restoration but is still an impressive sight and gives us the excuse to return. The museum is informative and well worth the time.

I really liked this museum, although the stuff it commemorates is terrifying. The carpet in the hallway shows the entire Somme area and that actually gave a really good overview. The museum tells the story of the Somme battle in a good way - lots of photographs and maps. Gives a good sense of the timeline and the different strategies.
The Thiepval monument and the associated cemeteries are likewise very worthwhile. It's just somewhat disturbing to get the details of the story and see all those names (and these are only those who went missing, and only from the British armies...)
A very educational place.

The museum is very small, you should know, it takes less than an hour to do, 1 hour max if you take your time.
Nevertheless I found it very interesting, especially the windows which focus on several men in particular, and which bring together letters, among other personal objects, which retrace their journey during the war. The plane is also nice to look at.
It is mainly the memorial that is important in Thiepval, but the museum is nice, as long as it does not cost too much. I did it as a couple, and we took the ticket valid for Péronne and Thiepval, while studying, which came to 6 euros each, very reasonable.
Be careful to keep the receipt if you use this double ticket, because this is what is required at the second museum!

I was there by bike. Three guides welcomed me. Although the guided tours were already over, a young Frenchman showed me around the site. For almost two hours he told me a lot about the battle and the memorial and answered all the questions I had. Really unique!
The view there speaks for itself. View from the German trenches to the English trenches.
The memorial: gladly again
The war: never again

Excellent exhibition and display. Very well laid out not too much information to overload the mind. The gallery showing the movement of soldiers in and off the front line was awesome and very well presented and well worth the visit.
