An unforgettable location, with such an awesome view. We learned about the Scottish 1745 uprising visiting the monument. We were informed that the bonnie Prince Charlie Stuart raised his standard not far from the monument. It definitely worth a visit.

The views in and around the monument are breathtaking, built on a beach on the shores of loch shiel, the monument leans ever so slightly. The monument commemorated those who died fighting the Jacobite cause and gave their lives to support Bonnie Prince Charlie in the Jacobite uprising in 1745 and it is around 18m high. I loved climbing the monument and standing beside the lone highlander and looking out across the loch as well as looking over to see the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct! The climb to the top of the monument is not that strenuous but it’s narrow and the steps are steep and there’s a heavy steel hatch door that you open (think it was supposed to be open already) and you climb up and enjoy the view which is definitely worth the effort and very rewarding! Think it was one of my favourite things to do in Glenfinnan!

Small car park which is being extended so lucky to get a space. Short walk to monument with minimal info but fantastic views. Also a short walk up to the viewing platform on the hillside. Visitor centre shut on Mon and Tues so we couldn't visit. Parking normally £3 or free for NT members however meter currently not working

The monument is not much to see but the views and surroundings are spectacular. If climb yo the top of the little hill behind the restaurant you will be able to see tge railroad tracts that were used in filming the opening scenes of Harry Potter. Worth the stop for the views.

Sadly we were on a coach tour with limited time to spend on site. There was a lot to see in a limited time but the monument can be viewed close up or from a higher viewpoint as well as the 12 arc viaduct from the other end of the carpark. You could easily spend a couple of hours here - we had less than 20 minutes

Opposite the visitors centre/toilets and two car parks for Glenfinnan viaduct, this imposing monument is well framed by the stunning loch and mountains behind. Some people were being allowed up to the top of the monument but this was very limited. At the time of visiting they had just completed resurfacing the area around it so you could go around and read all the plaques if you are interested in Jacobite history. Worth a look if passing

If you’re a member of the NTS and/or have an interest in the history of the Jacobite rebellion, don’t waste your time visiting. Why? Totally inadequate parking facilities. It appears that most visitors are here to see the viaduct (or as one visitor called it “the Harry Potter bridge”) and the Jacobite steam train (although most now call it the Harry Potter train or Hogwarts Train - grrrr!). I know that this isn’t the fault of the NTS but between them and the Highland Council (if it’s not their area, my apologies), they really need to sort out the parking situation and create separate, chargeable parking for all the Harry Potter/Instagram hordes.

What a magnificent monument on the banks of Loch Shiel (remember the film Highlander). Stunning location, stunning views. We booked well in advance so got to go up the monument on our own. Staff very helpful and as we are NTS members it was free (including parking). Highly recommended. Narrow windy stairs but the view at the top to die for.

A great place to visit after exploring the viaduct location on the other side of the road. The dogs were equally pleased after sitting with us waiting for the steam train to cross the viaduct, as they got to play in the loch to cool off. Even without the viaduct, the monument and its surrounding areas are a great place to sit peacefully and take in the stunning scenery.

We had a wonderful afternoon at Glenfinnan. The monument was spectacular in a beautiful setting beside Loch Shiel. Lots of Scottish history there.
There is ample car parking at the visitor centre and it is only a five minute walk to the monument although you have to cross a busy road to get to it.
Well worth a visit.

Going to the website might be helpful as we did not use the parking lot and I'm not sure. Good luck.

I plan on passing through Glenfinnan early in the morning, but would like to see the monument. I don't particularly care about the visitor center or exhibition, only the monument. Can I access the trail to the monument at 07:00 or 08:00?
Written August 2, 2017
Time of visit is not problem, because monument is accessible all time without any closed gates or fee. I recommended you climbing on small hill on opposite side of monument. From there is very nice view to monument and lake and old train viaduct in the valley. It is 380 meters long, 30 m high.

are dogs allowed down at the monument
Written September 20, 2016
As far as I know you can take dogs down to the lake and the monument itself, although not inside because of the very narrow staircase. As long as they are on a leash and under control (and obviously clean up after them if necessary!)
Written September 21, 2016
Hello,
Are the parking free and the monument accessible after 5 pm, or are there barriers closed ?
Thank you.

Best view of Glen Finnan viaduct by car
Written June 29, 2016
As hbf says you'll pass it and see it from the car but the best view is to walk up the hill behind the visitors centre for a good view. Steep hill though as I have walking problems and couldn't make it up.
