If you are in Ruvo, there are many churches and cathedrals. If you can't get into all of them, you must see this one. The architecture is unreal. to think of how long it took to build and without any machinery. The various religious statues and altars are so beautiful.

We visited at the same time as a group of local school children and were allowed down into the crypt all the previous buildings could be seen with some mosaic floor still in place. In the church are remains of wall frescos

Having spent a few hours getting to Ruvo (not the nicest drive) we were disappointed to encounter a funeral taking place within the Cathedral which curtailed our visit. However, given that this is one of the core activities for any building of this nature, you cannot really complain!
What we did see was a glorious example of Romanesque architecture which, from a personal point of view comes as such a welcome relief from the full blown Baroque which is the norm in Puglia.
The simplicity is the delight although the carvings were of a high quality.
For the reasons already given, we were unable to visit the crypt or look around as we would have liked but this Cathedral is certainly worth the trip. That said, Ruvo is not located in one of the more interesting parts of Puglia so it's a stop en route somewhere else rather than a destination in its own right. The old town, whilst attractive, would not be my choice of a place around which to base my holiday.

If you've been touring Puglia, you will certainly have seen plenty of superb Baroque. So Ruvo presents a little relief with the simplicity of Roamensque. If only the Italian school teachers could keep their school trips under some semblance of control and respect for the cathedral.

We were amazed to be in such a sacred and ancient place. One would never see something like this in the U.S., of course, being so ancient, and when one is walking through the underground area, you just get the shivers because it has been preserved so authentically.

Not far from the sea, a nice travel in the Apulia landscape, a small town, a precious example of the romanic style

Don't miss this church, the front side of the church is presenting wonderful decorations; an example of how your mind can fly back in the history.

I have been to this church many times.
It has long history. The crypt is open upon request.
It's also one of the most important places in my life as I married my husband in this cathedrale!

If you go to visit Ruvo don't miss the opportunity to visit its dome with its 10th century tower, and in the underground many storic tombs.
