Always listed in the highlights of visiting Romania, perhaps my expectations were subsequently too high. However, while the colourful cemetery is worth seeing as a curiosity, it seemed that once you have got the joke, it is the same thing repeated again and again. You...More

The Merry Cemetery of Sapanța – Maramures is the best place to go if you want to see the quality of the Romanian creative expression through wood art.

We arrived on Easter so the place was full of visitors. There are about 800 tombs there, which are painted in colors and each has a rhymed inscription describing the life or death of the person. Some of the tombs are marked with numbers, so...More

Consider spending about half an hour. We were in March, and it was empty, but I guess during peak time it is a huge problem for parking.

The cemetery is larger than I expected and ever growing. I enjoyed looking for humorous grave markers I had seen on American travel shows. This is one of the best attractions in Maramureș in my opinion.

I've been there in august 2015. They made us pay some RONs at the entrance, as i remember, and they were less gravestones that were that funny, most of them only rhymed and told some things from the life of the one that passed away....More

The location is good but unfortunately the church is under construction for more than 8 years. When ready, it will look gorgeous. I think the entry fee is not required

Well I have my friends to tell me some good stories.. they should translate some of the stories for the visitors to know what is going on with the story... but everything was fine all the people around are very nice!

The Merry Cemetery is a place to visit due to all the beautiful carved blue wooden crosses. Definitely a place to visit if you are up in the very north part of Maramures.

You are supposed to pay 4 RON entry fee, which includes the right to take photos. I can't recommend any accommodation in the village, but it certainly exists.
This place looks very interesting but I won't have the time to drive to Sapanta from Brasov or Suceava. Are there any other similar cemeteries in Romania?

No. There are no similar cemeteries in Romania and it takes quite awhile to drive there. It takes about five hours from Cluj-Napoca.
Hi, Do you know the visiting hours here? How much for cameras? Thank you :)

I was there in March 2017 and neither paid to get in nor paid for my camera. I took many photos for free.
