The Merry cemetery is definitely a unique place in Romania and the world. Yes, not all tomb stones are funny, but the atmosphere is definitely nice. The landscape is beautiful and it is definitely worth the visit. Yes there is an entrance, but it is...More

Wow, what a place! We very much enjoyed wandering through the graveyard even though we could not understand the words (there is a book you can buy if you are really interested - or the little stalls outside have a leaflet for sale). What a...More

This place has been on our to-do list for quite a while. We are glad we got to finally see it. The church and the crosses are beautiful, and it's worth spending some time visiting them. The church is currently under restoration, so there's not...More

Merry Cemetery is located in the middle of the small village of Sapanta. You first see the beautiful tiled roof of the church when you enter town. Parking is available on the streets, we had no problem. The grave markers were painted Sapanta blue with...More

Unique Place! Totally Worth de detour we made to see it! The church adjacent to the cemetery is also being renovated in the same spirit as those graves. It's going to be awesome when finished!

Entering into a cemetery should bring sadness. Not the case here - all is blue, painted and funny. People here want to be rememembered afther their pass away with a smile, and this is what the Merry cemetery does. Unfortunately, for foreign people, is very...More

I wish all cemeteries look like this one in Sapanta. It is a very colourful place. Almost all graves are similar and present important events of buried people. The death is not so scary in this place. I definitely recommend to visit this place.

Sapanta is located within a stones-throw from the Ukrainian border in northern Romania, and it is a good distance from the more-travelled routes in Transylvania, but it is worth the drive. The Merry Cemetery is unique. The church, with its colourful tiled roof, is interesting,...More

This cemetery is like no other I have ever seen. The headstones are vertical blue painted shafts with humorous or otherwise revealing information about the deceased. It is more like an outdoor folk museum than a cemetery.

No.3 on a check-list for visiting Maramures. We have been there for the first time and spent one hour. It is something rare...you must see!

You could get by car or you could find connections to take the train from Iasi at least to Sighet-- and then there might be some buses to Sapanta where the Cemetery is

You are supposed to pay 4 RON entry fee, which includes the right to take photos. I can't recommend any accommodation in the village, but it certainly exists.

No. There are no similar cemeteries in Romania and it takes quite awhile to drive there. It takes about five hours from Cluj-Napoca.
