José María Azaél Franco Municipal Cemetery
Nov 2020
José María Azaél Franco Municipal Cemetery
It is one of the most representative beauties in Latin America, it is recognized by local and foreign inhabitants as a modern wonder.
It has several figures found in the cemetery have Greek, Egyptian, Inca, Arabic, and natural forms, currently you can see figures referring to the fauna of the Galapagos Islands, idols and masks of the indigenous cultures of Ecuador, Gothic columns, arches, among many others.
Without a doubt, it is a very beautiful and spectacular place in the City of Tulcan that stands out as a tourist place in our province of Carchi, highly recommended to visit with family and friends.

One of the wonderful and tourist places of the city of Tulcan in the beautiful cemetery that this city has, this site is very visited by foreign and local people, it is very large and the most innovative and striking are its cypress sculptures, this It is a tree that grows in an abundant shape which is very useful for making figures. This "Green Sculpture" is unique in its kind, it was created by Mr. Azael Franco in 1936. There are many beautiful figures which draw a lot of attention. that are part of some cultures such as: Roman, Greek, Inca, Aztec and Egyptian, it is key to mention that the cemetery is divided into two areas: the first located in the front part of the cemetery, known as "Park of Memories" and the second located at the back, baptized with the name of "Altar of God".

History:

After the earthquake in 1923, the city underwent an urban redesign, in those days the new Cemetery began to function with colorful mausoleums located on the sides of the entrance.

In 1936 Don José María Azaél Franco planted the first cypresses that years later would become the greatest inheritance left to the city of Tulcán.

The characteristic that makes this cemetery unique are its impressive figures carved in cypress; Augustinian and pre-Columbian figures, Ecuadorian fauna, semicircular arches, pylons and giant masks.

This type of art granted the José María Azaél Franco Cemetery, on May 28, 1984 the recognition of: Cultural Heritage of the State, and Natural site of tourist interest.

The first figure made by Azaél Franco is called “Camino al Cielo” and is located in the front left part of the place.
The position of the gardens has allowed the division of the internal parks by name as follows: the first part at the entrance to the holy field is called "Altar of God (1936)" and the back part also made up of two side gardens is called "Parque de the Memories (1987) ”.

In 1985, after the death of the artist from Carche José María Azaél Franco, the responsibility of continuing with the work fell on Benigno Franco Carranco, son of the author, who is in charge of maintaining the garden known as "Altar of God".

A GOOD CITY
Jan 2020
Tulcan is a beautiful city for its landscape, people, culture and delicious food. Tulcan has several tourist sites, the most representative one is the cemetery since it has trees or plants with very attractive shapes. Around the city we can find a large number of parcels within its typical food: The shampoo is accompanied by mejido empanadas or pork cheek, fritters, quimbolitos and pumpkin or guava sweets. Pastuso hornado, the pork broth is its characteristic flavor. I recommend that you visit the city of Tulcan and learn about the culture of this city.
I love Tulcan because you can relax and have a good time.

Amazing cemetery
Jun 2020
Tulcan is a small city, but has charming places. It is capital of province of Carchi, have much history. It is a commercial city because is near from Colombia. If you come here, you can pay with pesos Colombianos. Furthermore, there are popular markets are big and you can eat much typical food. The cemetery is big with figures of cypress which each has different mean. Someone are animals, other are inspired about Pasto culture, also there are cubes spheres. There are some trails where there are wall of cypress with huge archways above head. This place is nice and very visited for Colombians because is near for them.

Cypress tree sculptures
Jan 2020
Just north of the parque Ayora in Tulcan's town center, there is this well maintained cemetery with cypress tree sculptures. It is no doubt Tulcan's main attraction and visited frequently by locals, who seem to regard it as an alternative to visit a park. Couples in love between some of the tombs. Children playing on the grassy spaces. Families and individuals taking selfies. Not things you normally associate with a graveyard.

The part closest to the entrance is perhaps the most appealing as it almost feels like entering a labyrinth. It is allowed to climb the walls with boxes of the deceased. From upstairs you get an overview of the huge cemetery and surroundings.

A different way of seeing death
Aug 2019 • Couples
It’s very interesting to see how they manage to make a place that can be sad into a place that invites peace and beauty.
The tree sculptures are really beautiful and well kept.
The cemetery is very well kept and clean. You can also go on top of the vaults to view the whole cemetery.

Perfect for an Afternoon Stroll
Apr 2019 • Couples
We crossed the Colombia-Ecuador border and took a taxi for $3.50 directly to the cemetery. A kind shop owner stores our bags for $1 while we explored the cemetery.
The bushes are absolutely amazing. Very creative and very well kept.
The cemetery is quite large, the best View is from above the mausoleum. There are staircases that you can take to walk along them and get some great panoramic photos.
There is a nice open garden where you can enjoy a picnic on the benches or flat grassy areas with no grave stones.

In my opinion Tulcan is a very beautiful and quiet city because its people are very kind and charismatic, you can visit several places like Supermaxi, Playgrounds, Cemetery, among others. Tulcán cemetery has a very original structure, how many ornamental figures are made of cypress trees in their gardens, besides outside the cemetery you can find several restaurants with typical food such as baking, guinea pig, ice cream paila; Also near this place you can find quality hotels such as Hotel Confort.
