This castle is a gem in Almansa. Full of character and history. Spiral staircase is amazing. Buy tickets at base (3 euros). Check times, it was 10-2 & 4-6pm, when we went in November.

Was only in Almansa for a short time on a coffee stop on a coach tour, so did not have enough time to really explore, however, the views of the castle are still very good indeed, it does look daunting with all the steps to reach the castle, somewhere to avoid if you are elderly or infirm, but you still get the views from the town hall square.

I have no idea when it is open, or if it is ever open, but it is impressive nonetheless. I drive around town to get some photos from various angles. If you´re passing near almansa, it´s worth a few minute stop to check it out.

Climbing the Moorish Castillo these days is beyond me, but I have done it numerous times in the past and it is a rich rewarding experience, unless you have to do it after a serious thunderstorm. Even if you do not climb it, you can see it from everywhere in the entire large valley of the Battle of Almansa, let alone the city itself, which it completely dominates. It is the focus for the Moors versus Christians mock battles fought out between local districts of the town, who take sides, in the Spring each year. This attracts huge numbers of people to the city.

We visited Almansa for a quick coffee stop en route to Alcala del Jucar (the cave village). It's a very pretty castle surrounded by picturesque streets. As previous people have commented, the castle was shut, which is a pity as I'm sure it would be worth looking around it and the surrounding vista. There's also a courtyard less than a thirty second walk from the base of the castle steps which lead to a church and fountain. You can access the churchyard quit easily which has strange art statues in it's grounds.

The castle is easy to reach. It is huge and surrounded by a gorge-like moat (mostly empty). You can park right next to the castle so seeing it is easy. Unfortunately, despite what the internet says, the inside is not open for visits as it is being renovated. Still, it is spectacular and quite an impressive sight.

Looks great from outside buy you can't even get close to walk around it. Take a pic from the road and drive on. What a shame...the old town is neglected too.

Stopped off as we saw the castle high in the sky whilst driving past the town.
Walk the perimeter of the castle and you will find some good pastry shops nearby.
Unfortunately the castle was closed again.

This Castle has allot of steps and is not for anyone who has fear of heights. It is in the city center and has been restored, It is not very big but it has charm.
