We took a trail from Creel to some wind carved rock formations and then came down into this valley that featured this 1700 century church. It was locked up, but we were able to check out the nearby cemetery that still had some Day of the Dead decorations adorning the graves.

The Mision was part of the village tour. The church is surrounded by a valley of beutiful rock formations. The building itself is sparse and the inside has photos of the stations of the cross as well as an altar. The pews were not on display.
Th eguide said it was built in the 16th century.

Outside in the courtyard local Tarahumara residents sold their wares.

This tour was definitely worth the 210 peso cost.

Loved the old Mission and style of the church of San Ignacio.

We had a good tour guide who was well acquainted with the history of the place.

Dating from the 1700's it is rare to see a church unchanged since it was first built. Its simple decoration adds to its charm. A visit here is included in tours to creel from the Mirador hotel.

We went here during a nice tour with Jose from Tarahumara Tours in Creel. He drove us around and showed us the Valley of the Frogs and the Mushrooms, this church and Petra's cave (she actually lives there). As a part of the Tarahumara community, he speaks their language, knows everyone and can explain a lot about these people. The church is very simple, but has loads of character and the view around is very pretty.

Built sometime before the Jesuits were expelled from the New World in the 1760s, the church is located in a Tarahumara community. The building has elements of syncretism of the original area beliefs blended with the Catholic teachings of the early Jesuit missionaries.
