We called on here because it was on our route and love a good botanical garden.
It’s nice. You really do need to pay to have the golf caddy and driver to maximise what you will see on your trip, but the entry fee for a foreigner of 1500rupees in difficult to justify- to enter a national park (where you can see elephants, maybe leopards, and a an array of other wildlife and native habitat) costs 1750.... plus of course the cost of the caddy and driver- it’s not a cheap visit.
Unfortunately our driver/guide wasn’t very forthcoming... he took us to the key spots and pointed out certain things. We asked a few questions and tried to be polite and friendly but despite our efforts our driver did not purvey any energy or enthusiasm towards his role, and he was very reserved with his words and smiles... this was disappointing as could have made our visit excellent instead I would regard it as very mediocre.

still under development. but exceptionally designed and well maintained.. was surprised to see such a garden in dry zone area like hambanthota..you have to take a park vehicle to see the full garden as its too large to cover on foot.

Still not complete but maintained under trying circumstances, a good way to kill a bit of time and enjoy the fauna and flora.

This was our first time at the Dry Zone Botanic Gardens and it was an excellent visit. We paid Rs.1,000 for an electric vehicle with a driver/guide and that is highly recommended as it would be difficult to view the 300 acres on foot, especially as the gardens are being expanded in scope and size continually.

We stayed in the Circuit Bungalow (decent accommodation with A/C rooms, reasonably priced) and visited the Garden as it opened at 8:00 am,as recommended, due to the heat later in the day and the chance of seeing more wild life. The taller trees in the Garden meant for shade, are still growing. Only about 60% of the 300 acres set aside for the Garden has been developed so far. Hats off to the designers and the keepers of this well-maintained Garden, which contains a wide variety of dry-zone plants (both local and foreign). In addition, there are roses and orchids that seem to flourish under this unfriendly climate. This Garden perfectly complements the other better-known Botanic Gardens in Sri Lanka.
The visitors who do not wish to walk this large area, may use the electric buggies, driven by knowledgeable Guides, for an extra fee. Also impressive is the fact no chemicals are used to grow the plants, except for some, such as orchids in the nursery (according to the staff).
Highly recommended.

Small but well maintained dry zone garden close to Ranna. Very beautiful at the lake at sunset . Another place to visit on the way to Kataragama.

It is still in its toddler stage with many species of plants settling down to show their beauty and character. Being quite a large botanical garden it is definitely advisable to use a caddy cart to traverse within. Mid day heat was some what harsh but I assume that when the canopies of the tree species planted along the main driveways grow to coalesce with one another it will be completely transformed to a different place with a more conducive micro climate that would be created by the tunnels of green to drive or walk through! All these tree species are growing fast so I believe that it will be a matter of a few more years.
Glass house, xerophytes and the scraggy creeper covered plant house are three focal areas with the collection of air-plants (Tillandsia sp.) that deserves to be seen. There are animal shaped and other forms in topiary and a long chain link topiary at the base of a palm avenue which are attractive.
It is a peaceful place to be and to enjoy the plant life surrounding the visitor. The caddy cart driver who accompanied me was very friendly and explained the garden layout in detail giving me ample time to take good photographs.
A visit to Dry Zone Botanical gardens at Mirijjawila is worth to be added to the itinerary when visiting South of Sri Lanka.

If this had cost 500 rupees it might have been ok, but at 1500 rupees per person plus 1000 for a vehicle to take us round it isn’t worth it. It is clearly a work in progress, but much is either undeveloped or overgrown. What there is, isn’t particularly unique

Could say as the largest botanical garden in SL with only half of it is still under development. So the trees are about 10-15 years of age and are cultivated for a plan. Lots of trees from dry zone as well. Thumbs up for the effort to keep this thing live given the dry zone location. Can take a electric vehicle with driver at an additional cost. Which is worth, as driver would explain in detail of trees and the development of the park. Really worth a visit and pretty well maintained.
