This is the first and only dry zone botanical garden in Sri Lanka. It consists total of 300 acres and presently only 180 acres are developed. The balance portion is under development stage. It is planned in a very attractive way and it holds many varieties of plants.
This is not a place to see flowers - if you want to see flowers you may visit Peradeniya or Hukgala botanical gardens. This is a place to watch plants grown in dry zone and have a different kind of enjoyment.
It is said that this is the only place in the world where more than fifty heads of states planted trees on the same day at the same time when they visited Sri Lanka for the 23rd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Sri Lanka in November 2013.
For those who love to learn about plants grown in the dry zone, this is an ideal place to carry out a study on that.
It has ample parking, electric charged buggy cars, souvenir shops, ample space to sit and relax, very clean toilets, and many more.
Definitely this is one of the best attractions in the country for foreigners.
We visited the place in a buggy car, the driver Mr. Vijaya Kumar's knowledge and explanation is exceptionally good (for Sri Lankans). He may need to improve his English to explain to foreign tourists.

Nicely laid out botanical garden. Only dry zone botanical garden in the country. Still under cultivation. Public amnesties are completed and good. Ample car parking. Several souvenir and local sweet meat shops.
Looks promising . Will be a major attraction once the present efforts are in full bloom in the future. Even now it is a cool place to relax.

Still not complete but maintained under trying circumstances, a good way to kill a bit of time and enjoy the fauna and flora.

Visited in August. It was very hot and lack of rain made the place very dry. Do rent a buggy as the green houses are a distance from one another. Only certain green houses are worth visiting. Hardly any butterflies in the butterfly garden. Our friendly guide said the best time to visit is in Dec/Jan when there is rain. If you are a Malaysian, most of the plants found there are same as those back home.

Go to the garden on a late afternoon to walk around the grounds. The are many fine specimens of trees and they offer shade and a bench under many of them. Or take a golf cart drive around. The wild birds, monitor lizards and peacocks add to the beauty of this garden.

This was our first time at the Dry Zone Botanic Gardens and it was an excellent visit. We paid Rs.1,000 for an electric vehicle with a driver/guide and that is highly recommended as it would be difficult to view the 300 acres on foot, especially as the gardens are being expanded in scope and size continually.

The botanical garden has been opened in 2013 and is in the process of becoming a botanical garden full of beauty. The only thing that is preventing it is the time the plants take to properly grow. But look at my pics and see awesome the design is and what will it become in the future. We met an awesome buggy driver plus guide 'Vijayakumara' who knew all the kinds of trees, the history, etc., which he talked about with passion. This is located in the dry zone so its hot, etc. Best way to visit is to get a buggy for (abt 7 ppl) & it costs less than $10.

Was great surprise to find this on the list of things to do ,as I m a plants and tree enthusiast and would love to know more about plant life in general as I’m creating a garden myself .. the main things to see there are the cactus collection and the beautiful orchid dome they also have a butterfly place but unless it’s season for them to be out no much butterflies around when we were there furthermore I suggest you hire the small golf car to go around it’s 500 rupees for an hour which should be enough for the entire tour the entree is 1500 rupees for adults and half of that for kids .. my kids loved it going around on the small golf cart was part of the fun ..
