The Walawe River Safari is a must-do for bird watchers. We saw a variety of species and the highlight was seeing various types of egrets and herons all flocking in together - at around 5/6pm - to spend the night in just two trees. I've never seen so many birds together in congregation. They just kept coming and coming, flying overhead and all landing in these two trees creating a vision of white, no branches to be seen.

The bee eaters and parakeets were a delight and the weaver bird nests, fascinating. We also witnessed trees full of bats, and the sunset as we headed back was magical.

I only wish the trip was longer. I could've sat in that boat for half a day watching the birds and although brilliant, the whole thing felt a little rushed and was over very quickly. The boat had quite a noisy engine too which did scare some birds away. It would've been nice to switch it off and just sit in silence for a while, waiting to see what turned up.

A section of beach at the end of the river was covered in litter. Really sad sight considering it lies between river and ocean and will end up being a huge problem for many species. It hadn't just washed up over night either - there was loads of it. I hope the locals and those running this trip will make an effort to clean it up in the future.

Other than that, both gentleman were polite and provided a fantastic trip. Thank you very much Sisira. We love Sri Lanka and the bird watching opportunities are aplenty!

We went at 4pm for the sunset boat ride. The trip takes about 1.5 hours and the diversity of species inhabiting the mangroves is stunning. Especially for bird watchers you can certainly spend a much longer time observing them. We saw monkeys, fruit bats and water buffaloes as well. The highlight was the river end where it meets the ocean. Magical!
The guide/boat driver is kind and really helpful with the kids as well.
Thé coconut drink on the return trip is a nice gesture. Would highly recommend.

It was great value for money, we saw some amazing wildlife. It was very tranquil and so full of life - we saw many birds, bats and monkeys on the trip. Our guide was amazing and able to point out many of the birds by name aswell as giving us coconuts to drink from. We had a beautiful sunset as we were travelling back down the river. It is a trip not to be missed!
Thank you Sisira!!

My wife daughter and I went on this magical trip witnessing the almost unbelievable array of beautiful birds that Sri Lanka has to offer. We went late afternoon which was perfect because it wasn't too hot and the river was all ours to enjoy. We saw herons, eagles, kingfishers and the quite eerie sight of 100s of bats suspended from the branches of just a cluster of trees. They were huge. It was so serene and at the halfway point you are taken to the point at which the river meets the sea. That was special. The only downside was we didn't see and crocodiles but luckily we had seen so many of them at Yala National Park the previous day.

Super close to our hotel and top guides and driver - and fresh coconuts afterwards.

So so much to see - we were blown away. More birds than I could imagine. Trees full of sleeping bats, loads of monkeys, water buffaloes paddling along, a farmer in a speedboat with his pigs, a giant croc peeking out of the water and the most awesome point where the river turns into the sea.

Do not miss this trip.

When visiting Southern Sri Lanka be sure not to miss this river safari! First of all Sisira collected us from our hotel by Tuk-Tuk and had us at the boat within 15 minutes. Sisira and his 2 colleagues, both very friendly have a vast knowledge if the wildlife and area around them. They join in with our excitement when spotting various monkeys and birds and crocodiles and give the safari their 110%.

The river safari us so relaxing and if you stop just to take in the scenery and beautiful plants and birds around you it is utter bliss! Half way through we stopped at a beach and Sisira walked us along it and helped us with photographs. We enjoyed a king coconut refreshment on the way back, continually spotting different birds and other wildlife. Such a beautiful part of the island and great service
Thanks again!

This was a really charming late afternoon trip. We were picked up from our hotel by the wonderful Sisi who took us by tuk tuk to the river where the boat was waiting. During the trip we saw and learned about many species of Sri Lankan birds including eagles and kites, and we spotted two crocodiles. The sharp eyes of our 3 guides picked out many we would have missed. On reaching the sea we had a short walk on the beach where we saw wild pigs. after a refreshing king coconut we cruised back watching a wonderful sunset. We would thoroughly recommend this peaceful excursion...
Sisi is an excellent guide in all areas, so if you are lucky enough to be able to book him, he is a very good driver and a mine of information.

Advertised as a crocodile safari among others but as soon as we got on the boat, firstly the people speak NO english, so the guiding is very cursory. Secondly, they immediately tell you that no crocodiles as they run away from the boats with the engines.
