A pearl in Civitella del Tronto... to treasure
Sep 2020
The fortress is a place of exceptional historical interest. It was one of the last fortresses of the "Regno delle due Sicilie" besieged (in 1860-1861) during the formation of Italy, as we know it today. Weapons such as those now on display in the museum were used and the roads you will travel along were used by soldiers during that and other sieges. The place, in short, deserves to be visited, but also deserves to be cared for more.
There are no audio-guides, nor was it possible to make a guided tour.
The information material, often small, is present only in certain areas particularly circumscribed, for the rest you will have to move along a path not well specified. There is only a drinks machine, when a bar would be very nice.
Please take care of this place

Very large fort with great panoramic views
Apr 2019 • Couples
Above the small town of Civitella del Tronto is this large fort, which luckily was not damaged during the 2016 earthquake, and is open for visits. The fort is mostly a ruin, although some barracks have been renovated. One houses some typical soldier's furniture, and part of it houses the military museum (explanations are only in Italian). However, the main reason to enter the fort, is the panoramic deck with great views over Gran Sasso, and when we visited quite a few of the mountains were still snow covered. Go early, as then generally it is clearest.

Huge fort to explore above the beautiful town of Civitella
Oct 2017 • Friends
I love visiting here, but having seen it over the past 10 years, it is a bit depressing to see it somewhat in disrepair. Some new rooms open, while a large amount has been closed off to the public. This may be due to earthquake damage from the past years and/or lack of funding, but overall the experience is still quite positive and there isn't a year that passes without a visit by my family.

What a view from the top!

It is quite a hike up to the fortress. There is a fee to get inside, but the panoramic view is incredible.

Definitely worth a visit
May 2017 • Couples
If you are in Abruzzo and in the area of Civitella del Tronto, it is certainly well worth taking time to visit this imposing old fortress which dominates the top of the small town. It is massive in size and generally in good condition, enabling the visitor to gain a good impression of how it must have been to be a soldier stationed here long ago. The views are magnificent, although soldiers based here in the middle of winter must have endured a cold and bleak existence.

A gem of a place to visit and, at the time of our visit at the end of May, virtually devoid of tourists. We had just arrived from Rome where such a historic site would have been swamped with tourists and the inevitable queues.

It is a beautiful uphill walk..very uphill
Jul 2016 • Couples
It is a very long walk and an uphill battle. But the views help take your mind off the panting and sweating. And the views are stunning! From every view point along the way to the Fortezza entrance. The cost is small €3 and there really isn't a way to go through the site, wander to your heart's content. Even the well is beautiful! There is a beautiful walk out along the top of the wall at the very backside of the castle the views are stunning! There isn't alot of signage throughout but there is a cute little gift shop.

Nice town with a fantastic view over the Abruzzo landscape
Jul 2016
The town is small and very ancient with small houses and narrow allayes. Found a nice restaurant with exellent pasta!
Take the time to walk around the fortress.

Game of Thrones, anyone?
May 2016 • Couples
Very well preserved/restored medieval town and a spectacular fortress with gorgeous views of idyllic landscape.
For a couple of moments I felt like being on the Game of Thrones set somewhere in King's Landing.
Italy has many hidden gems, this is definitely one of them. Ridiculous small amount as entrance fee - 5 EUR, if I recall correctly.

Amazing views
Apr 2016
Well worth the trip to get here. The fortress is well preserved and a reasonable entrance fee charged. If, like us, you like to see and take in everything then allow a couple of hours for your visit. Be prepared for a steep climb to get there from the village (which in itself is worth a wander around) if you go out of season because although there is an escalator is was not working.
