We visited coffee bay in June 2023 as a family, we stayed at sunset bed and breakfast. Lindie was our host. We were broken into on the early hours of Sunday morning of June 18th. Luckily we were asleep, cell phones, lap tops, shoes, my make up bag gone! When we asked lindie about safety of the place, she said she has never felt safer. Deceitful, I have done some research and apparently it happens regularly there. The community are really struggling including the businesses,I felt like this was planned and lindie was part of this.... Just a gut feeling. Please be careful in this area. Rather opt for the bigger busier hotels to stay at
Don't use the bnbs, it's dodge and dangerous.... Please be alert and be careful and safe

This is one of these few dream beaches in the world. ( I have been to hundreds of beaches world wide) The nice thing is that Coffee Bay is not over commercialized. These is excellent accommodation and food available with views towards the beach. There good hiking possibilities along the coast and there are cultural tours to nearby villages. I would have loved to stay longer. I felt safe too, and that is not everywhere in South Africa.

Weather and tides give the beach a different look from one hour to the next. Lots of people around at the weekend on the part away from the Ocean View hotel. Mostly locals. This is also the side where litter can be a nuisance.

If the bracing waves are not your cup of tea and swimming looks too dangerous, you can opt for beachcombing at low tide. Seashell of all sorts pile up in the the nooks and crannies between the craggy rocks that take over from the sandy beach on both outer sides of the beach. The lower type on the right-hand side have the amazing intricate structures of molten lava "frozen" solid and later shaped into mazes of lace-like patterns by the relentless action of the roliing seas.

The only thing that might deter you from driving to Coffee Bay is the dreadful road leading there.

The place is great. The beaches are beautiful. Take care with the streaming. Some locals are annoying. Begging and trying to cheat you with special guided tours or whatever. Makes you to feel sometimes unsafe. Some places of the beach are dirty and even with shards of glass. So take care. I can recommend Coram Deo for your stay.

For a tour of Hole in the Wall or Mapuzi caves please contact Prince +27719215397. Such a wonderful, well-informed local tour guide who is always happy to help! Available via whatsapp or call. We have been with him on 3 separate occasions and he keeps getting better

Loved my time on the beach. On a late afternoon in February the water was a bit chilly but the beach beautiful and I enjoyed it.

Allow me to set the scene: It’s December, peak season. We travel the breadth and width of our beautiful country every peak season and it’s always a challenge with the massive crowds. But Coffee Bay is so very different.

What a breath of fresh air. We travelled here not having firm arraignments for our stay. Yet we had the luxury of picking just the right spot that suited us to the tea. We camped at Coffee Bay Caravan Park, 5 minutes walk from the beach. We are fortunate enough to have a superbly equipped rig that has a full bathroom, shower and dressing room so we would not be able to comment on the facilities but the camping sites are to die for. We loved every second of our stay and vowed to return.

The Transkei conjures something wild and untamed.. It has stunning beaches and views every direction The sea is very good for serious surfing and paddle skiing or just swimming. The swimming beach has waves which are gentle and predictable. Life guards were present and attentive.

The biggest disappointment was the litter that was everywhere around Coffee Bay and also on the beach. Together with the stray feral dogs

We went to Coffee Bay for a holiday with the extended family and all our young kids over Christmas, and it was not a great experience. It’s a long drive from Joburg and the last 70km to Coffee Bay is potholed and there are unexpected speed bumps at intervals along the road.

What looks like a beautiful beach in all the marketing material, in real life is littered with beer bottles and discarded food packets. I don’t know if it was a bad time of year to visit, but there's loud partying most days, with music blaring and drinking at the Shebeen just outside our accommodation going well into the night. There is a big police presence and they warn you away from the beach on the Christmas and New Year’s public holidays. And, if you can’t go to the beach there is really nothing else to do there as it is so remote.

We stayed at Seashells Guest House, which is basic and not very clean. The rooms and bedding smelled musty and we had to rewash everything in the communal kitchen before it could be used. There also seemed to be an issue with the municipal water and power, the water would often be off for hours at a time. I would strongly suggest taking your own drinking water as a few of us ended up with stomach bugs. The hosts are nice enough, but they should really warn guests (especially those travelling with young children) against coming to Coffee Bay at that time of year.

We spent two weeks there, so we had no choice but to embrace the environment, and once we discovered the Hole in the Wall beach which is clean and family friendly we would drive there every day, but we did cut our holiday short. I definitely wouldn’t recommend a family holiday in coffee bay in December. If you would like to explore the area, Hole in the wall looks like a better place to stay.
