- Dorathe explorerPembrokeshire, United Kingdom8 contributionsQuieter but just as impressive as PontcysyllteWe had just been to Pontcysyllte, whch was extremely busy and this was much quieter and just as impressive with the railway viaduct towering above us. and easier to reach. We were impressed by the skill of the engineers and workmen, who produced these amazing structures.Visited July 2021Written July 11, 2021

It blew away the cobwebs and was lovely to see so many people enjoying the views, taking a stroll with passing barges. Truly an amazing structure . - claccer110 contributionsbeautifulFree parking available in many spots, lovely views if not quite as good as other aqueducts in the area. We walked some time and into the tunnel, which is approx 1/4 long but in the bleak darkness feels much longer, but was very cool respite from the searing heat. Enjoyable hour and a good walk, recommend it.Visited August 2020Written August 11, 2020
- Maria515Tonypandy, United Kingdom194 contributionsGreat day outLovely day out, we have dogs so we parked in Llangollen (what a lovely little town) and walked along the canal about 4 miles to the aqueduct, we then walked across and stopped at the Aqueduct Inn (Chirk side) fantastic views, lovely beer and friendly staff and then caught the bus back to Llangollen (bus stop opposite). The views across the aqueduct were superb and easy to walk and pass others, lots of boats going across and if your lucky you will see a train. Great day outVisited July 2022Written July 24, 2022
- MarubaNottingham, United Kingdom484 contributionsHighlight of our day in WalesWe were staying in a cottage in Shropshire and popped over to Wales for the day to visit the Pontcysyllte aqueduct, Llangollen and canals. At the end of the day we went to Chirk which turned out to be the highlight. The architecture is amazing and views walking over Chirk aqueduct fabulous. A sign at one end welcomes you to England, so you can actually hop between England and Wales! We watched the sunset through the viaduct arches adjacent to the aqueduct. We were also lucky enough to be walking across at the same time as a narrowboat was crossing and followed the boat through the nearby Chirk tunnel which was great timing as they lit our way otherwise you'd need a torch. If you have an hour to spare in the area Chirk is definitely worth a visit. We parked on a nearby road making sure not to block any driveways.Visited February 2023Written February 23, 2023

Lovely walk all in all. Paths are well kept - still worth wearing walking boots though!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 14, 2023
- RoddersSunderland, United Kingdom325 contributionsDay visit while passing through townSuperb piece of architecture, can be seen from the country park. Signage to get there is very poor, no mention of the aquaduct on the country park sign. Toilets all closed while we were there due to Covid. Walk through the park to the equally impressive viaduct. Climb up steps from park to walk onto the aquaduct and catch a barge passing over. Pay to park only.Visited September 2020Written September 14, 2020
- YuugiVincentia, Australia171 contributionsAqueduct, railway viaduct and tunnel - interesting combination. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct further up the canal gets all the attention but the Chirk Aqueduct, railway viaduct and the canal tunnel provide something different. And the scenery each end of the tunnel is totally different. Chirk Bank at the southern end of the Chirk Aqueduct is pleasant and it's well worth the walk down the hill to the pub where one can outside and look across the river and up at the aqueduct.Visited September 2019Written January 15, 2020

Visiting both the aqueduct and tunnel is a great way to spend an hour or much longer.
You can walk across the aqueduct, which spans across England and Wales, and offers great views of the countryside and railway viaduct.
The tunnel takes 5-10 to walk through, at a gentle pace. There is a handrail and the path is pretty much smooth and free of trip hazards. Wouldn’t recommend without a torch, but the torch on your phone is sufficient.
Easy to access, by parking at the Caffi Wylfa (nice coffee), then a couple of minutes stroll down to the tunnel and aqueduct.

A great view across the aqueduct is to be had from the Glyn Ceiriog road. Parking is tricky but the road to the station is wide enough for safety. The footpath across is safe but scary. The views of the river and the surroundings are spectacular. A detailed information board gives you the history and the Wales / England border at either end has signage. A busy canal with narrow boats adding to the scene. Good walks along the towpath.

Which café do you purchase the tickets for 45 minute boat trips on Chirk Aqueduct please? I have contacted one café and they know nothing about it.

Hi, sorry can't help you with the 45 min boat ride ticket, but, if you contact the Llangollen Tourist Information I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.
Thanks for asking,
CW

Hi. Is there parking at Chirk Aqueduct? And which is better - Chirk or Pontcysyllte aqueduct?

There is a cafe very close to both the chirk tunnel and aquaduct that has free parking for the walk and is lovely to pop in for a cuppa. It's just across the road from the aquaduct and tunnel.
