Impressive castle
Aug 2020 • Solo
One of the most impressive castles that I’ve visited.
It houses a wine museum with very interesting information.
The tour was great and the views were even better. Even though it is dangerous to stop in the middle of the winding roads leading to the castle, in of of the curves I found the best spot for a picture.

Beautiful castle with amazing views
Dec 2019
We went through Penafiel on a day trip and decided to drive up to the castle. We managed to arrive just before the last tour of the day so joined that instantly. The tour is only offered in Spanish so my partner had to translate for me, but even so it was still worth it. The castle was uniquely narrow and there were some great facts and stories about how it was built and what took place there. You need to be either a Spanish speaker, or with a Spanish speaker though to make the most of this as I would of missed out on so much information had it not been for my partner.

See it if you are already there

Not worth the drive - if you are there see it but don’t count on the tour. 45 minutes of talk with no useful historical info. From far the Castel is beautiful- from close, its cheaply restored with wrong materials. Somehow I feel it was built as a castle but not to serve as one - felt a bit fake as point of protection. The views are great but the guide is clueless and a bit rude. Don’t expect English in the tour even though ticket sales are in English.

A peculiar layout
Jul 2019
The very well preserved machicolated ramparts make an imposing view of this large, thin fortress. The interiors have little to offer. That´s probably why a modern wine museum was built inside the walls. It makes a good starting point if you´re visiting the wineries. Here, you can get a lot of information about the wine making process and the different grape varieties that grow in the area.

A very interesting visit not only the castle, but the Wine Museum that is inside. It is located at the side of the town of Peñafiel, at walking distance

Over-sized group
Sep 2019
It's only possible to visit the castle by guided tour which means you have to follow 50 people around trying to listen to one guide with a loudspeaker. The guide was not very informative (when we could hear him) and told us just things we could find out in any web site e.g. dimensions of the castle walls, when it was built etc.

The visit covers very little of the building and because of the tour and the huge size of group that goes round at a time, you see very little. Our group was particularly disturbed by several very noisy children whose parents did nothing to control. The castle management should have separate tours for children with activities which would interest them. Listening to a dull guide droning on about the colour of the stonework (which we could see for ourselves) is only going to make children restless.

We felt that the visit was a rip-off.

Extraordinary
Oct 2019 • Couples
Said to be the longest castle in Spain, this structure overlooks Penafiel and dominates the landscape. You can walk up or drive - limited parking at the top. Entry for the castle and wine museum is €6.60 - no concessions. Expect to join a guided group around the castle, conducted in Spanish, but our guide was able to answer questions in English. The helpful guide leaflet is in Spanish and English. There are also a lot of stairs which will make access difficult for some. But the layout and story is fascinating and you should get some great views. Note the ‘chimneys’ on the hillside - vents to several miles of tunnels under the castle used by various bodegas to store wine.

Beautiful
Sep 2019 • Couples
The castle is amazingly located on the hill over the town, so the views from the top are stunning. To go in, you need to join the guided tour in Spanish. Definitely worth, even if you don't speak Spanish. Our guide, Marta, was super enthusiastic and very caring for everybody, wonderful guide! Inside the castle there is also museum of wine, as we had a car we skipped this part, but I guess it must be also lovely experience. There is a car park next to the castle entrance, though I need to admit it did not look very spacious, we found the space without the problem, but I think in higher season it can be a little bit challenging.

Tour guide was very engaging and enthusiastic. Unfortunately guided tours are only in Spanish but even if you miss the explanation, the wonderful views from the top are well worth it.
