Being from Scotland, I really enjoyed the history behind this distillery. The distillery is well presented but as the tours are only conducted in Japanese, I felt it there was something lacking. It wasn't possible to get up close to the process as the non guided tour sections ensured you stayed behind glass screens and barriers. Hopefully with the rugby... More

The distillery is cold, commercial and crowded. There are free tastings of the local firewater and man, does that stuff burn going down. Paid tastings were good - they've made some good stuff. Pity most of the good stuff isn't for sale anymore. And the shop - you'd think that it'd be cheaper at the source. You'd be wrong. Overall... More

It is located near Yoichi station which is less than 30min from Otaru by train. There is no entrance fee. The good thing is there is free sample given. There seemed to be tons of group tour tourists and the cafeteria when the free samples are give. I don't drink whisky so i did not know if it really taste... More

This attraction is in easy walking distance and is in sight of Yoichi Station so if you are on a visiting cruise ship in Otaru then you can easily visit at the cost of just a return train journey with a cost of ¥360 one way. There will be English paper guides given out so you can make your own... More

Traveling with a pet can be tricky and this place is very anti-pet which means if it is a hot day, you probably should not visit here. The free tastings are great for a quick stop. The shop is well stocked with all sorts of things. The tour takes 70 min according to the brochure and is free. So providing... More

PURE MALT NIKKA WHISKY - “Explore, experience and enjoy the spirit of Japan!” If one looks deep into the eyes of the pure malt ‘Masataka Taketsuru” Nikka Whisky, they will witness and discover the tradition of Japan, hear the word “spirit” and know that this is among the finest whiskies they will ever get to taste. Yoichi does not have much to offer, therefore visiting the Nikka Whisky Distillery becomes a must when you are in Otaru (only 30 minutes away from Yoichi by JR train). The visit is perfect for family travelers because it is quite educational for kids, daddy would love the whisky tasting (free and fee-paying both available), and mom would not mind... More

Very well set out trail for visitors showing not only the distilling process but the history behind Nikka whiskey. A very touching story dealt with sensitively without being sentimental. The tasting of up to three whiskies is also popular. This is a free activity but if you are like us we ended up spending lots in the shop for whiskey... More

We arrived at the beautiful facility in the afternoon eager to get to the tasting room and sampling area. After the tour guide's 45min walk through of the production facility and history of the founder, we finally arrived at the tasting room where Nikka offers their full range of whiskey labels for around 400 yen per 15cc shot. We had... More
