Surrounded by dense forest, dim sunlight filtered through the trees and off the beaten path. Wonderful location for a picnic or just a day hike. Views of the are limited to the shoreline in Summer. I’ve snowshoed here in the Winter but the lake was covered in snow. Trails are well maintained with lots of good signage.

After reading the reviews, I was a little worried initially about trekking to the lake in my trainers in a day with rainy weather. This turned out to be unfounded as I found it was quite an easy trek as long as you took lots of care with your steps. When you get to the park, follow the white sign with arrow to the Hangetsu lake walk , rather than the steps near the toilet. Also be aware that there is a turn off to the right for the hike up to Mt Yotei, so keep to the left towards the lake. Eventually you would see the view of the lake and a map to confirm the path to walk down towards the lake. The view is absolutely breathtaking and we had the walk to all ourselves. Altogether it took us 45mins to and fro the lake from the carpark.

A really relaxing walk around and down to the lake. The scenery is really beautiful too, especially in autumn. You can also swim in the lake in summer!

I admit, we didn't make it to Lake Hangetsu as we were not prepared for the trek. There's hardly any reviews here for visiting during summer so here it is:

This is a proper trek and not a walk in the park. Proper trekking shoes are recommended, and not sneakers, which we had on, as the path can get slippery and trees/shrubs can get in the way. We saw a Japanese couple come fully geared for the trek as we exited the path, and they probably thought we were nuts to attempt it without proper shoes at the very least. However, we did come across a tanuki (raccoon dog) from a distance, so I was a happy camper even if I didn't make it to the lake.

This is an nice easy Show Shoe walk around Lake Hangetsu. The circuit takes 30-60 minutes depending on your level of fitness.

Located near the base of Mt Yotei just off Route 5. The Carpark is about 1.5kn off Route 5, turn off left heading from Kutchan to Niseko town on the small road that also has the little Udon Noodle place about 2-3 km from the St Moritz Bridge 'T' intersection leaving Kutchan. No sign, but a small restaurant flag just before the turn off. Check google maps first.

There are toilets etc but they're closed in Winter.

You can walk from the carpark toward Mt Yotei and see the small lake after approx 300m which is frozen over in Winter. You can circle clockwise or anti-clockwise.

The walk around will not go to the lake as its sunk down well below the trail. Caution if you do go on the lake and best not venture there unless your are with someone who knows the area.

You will get nice views of Yotei through the trees, and wander through the nice forest. A please hour or two and easy intro level walk.

Great time snowshoeing for a short time in the park for picture taking. It was quiet and really picturesque. The trail is quite easy for beginners as well. The park is beautiful all covered in snow and it was snowing as well while I was there.

This makes for a nice walk, in the woods, to reach the lake. Trails are well indicated, easy. Just like in the woods in The Netherlands or Belgium. It is a nice walk, cooler under the trees. nice lake. But not spectacular. Nice, if you have some time to fill or just want a relaxing walk.
