My friend took me here. Not so big but it has beautiful holy spring. Located near by Tirta Empul. So quite as we come late afternoon. Currently they are doing some renovation. I don't know how crowded this place could be in normal situations.

Very close to the famous, but crowded Tirta empul temple is this little water temple located. It is very beautiful and not any crowded. The water is very clean and helps to regain power.

The Mengening Temple is a beautiful water temple that is situated on a lush, landscaped hillside. It is estimated that this Temple was built around the 11th century, and is dedicated to the god of water. Today, the locals come to this temple to pray and collect holy water from the temple's springs which are believed to have healing powers.
This Temple has pools of water where both tourists and locals can come to perform a cleansing ritual that uses the waters to purify your mind, heart and spirit. It is believed that this cleansing ritual can help remove negative energies or bad karma.
UNESCO had designated this Temple as a World Heritage site because of its historical and cultual significance.

We participated in a Spirit and Stillness tour and our first stop was Mengening Temple.
We were first lead in a meditation by our guide. From there she explained the meaning of the ritual and how to complete it. Once we were done, she led us in a thank you ceremony at the temple. This was much more of an authentic experience than you will get at Tirta Empul Temple which was packed with tourists who didn't really understand the ritual that they were participating in.
If you want an authentic experience find a local guide who will take you there and walk you through this beautiful experience.

On of the most amazing places I have experienced in my life. Sacred waters, amazing beauty...
We were there with a priest who had done a special cleansing ceremony for us... Strong, beautiful.
I will return, for sure.
Worth to travel there.

This was our second visit to Pura Mengening and it was even more wonderful than the first visit earlier this year. Our joy in visiting is only marred by the fact that we have been so engrossed in our experiences there that we've forgotten to take pictures! There is always next time, I suppose.
For us, this temple with it's local people including the children who visit to quietly socialise & clean their bodies as well as purify their souls explicates the joy of life that we so often see among the Balinese people. You meet people of all ages from children to grandparents & beyond. After prayers, children splash, swim & play in the pools of crystal clear water.
The women's pool is separate to the men's pool, each having their own set of purifying spouts plus a natural fall of water. In the men's pool however it is worth a quick visit to see the waterfall they are required to stand under for their final stage of the cleansing process. My husband assures me that it is a profound &, literally, bracing experience.
There is a small changing area adjoining the women's area but it is minimalist at best (mud floor). For westerners who may not be aware, a small amount of semi-nudity may occur; just lower your eyes & not draw attention to the fact you've noticed. After all, that's to be expected in a bathing area. :)
A visitor's book recording donations is at the main entrance to the Pura (temple). Sarongs & sashes are required here for both sexes. A small warning that the stairs going down into the pool area is a long, gentle curve with the return journey being harder going on the calves, knees & less fit visitors.
It is well worth having a Balinese person to help with translation & to guide you through the appropriate behaviors. There are smaller water spouts throughout the complex which are associated with various life aspects including one for 'bringing out the inner beauty to the outside'.
I would recommend visiting this Pura at least once, preferably when not rushed so that you can take the time to absorb some of the beauty & peace that the surroundings provide.

We wanted to visit Tirta Empul but when we saw hundred cars and 5 tourist busses we decided to turn around before even entering. We decided to go to mengening temple and we were the only tourists. It was a lovely spot and some Balinese were actually bathing. If you like to visit non touristy places, you should go to this one!

This secluded temple is just a few minutes away from Tirta Empil with absolutely no crowd whatsoever. The complex is out of. Tomb Raider game with water flowing everywhere and a place to take a bath. Entry is free, but just make a donation when you enter. Carry a sarong along.

Within spitting distance from tourist trap Tirta Empul but the contrast couldn't be greater. When we went we quite literally had the place to ourselves....beautiful views....tranquil cascading water .... on a farly blstering day a refreshing dip in the pools was pure heaven; seperate mens and ladies though. Rustic in the best possible way....a true highlight

We went here by scooter from Ubud, lovely ride. The place is well maintained, quiet and we saw only a few other tourists. Less famous than other temples in this area, but certainly worth a visit!

Hi there, I would need an information about Mengening. Where's exactly the access point to get it ? From Google Maps it's impossible to find. Thanks for your attention, and for your replies. Regards, David
