The climb up through the tiny little streets is well worth this experience. The views from the castle are just terrific but the inside is amazing with what seems like endless little walkways and passages which reveal lived in houses. This honeycomb is both charming and surprising at the same time. Some great phot opp's here particularly with the wonderful church tower.

Through the narrow paths of a medieval village
... admiring doors, windows and walls
of an ancient castle
... under a crazy sunsetting sky

Our second visit to this lovely place, not to be missed, plenty of history and sometimes if you are lucky you can get a glimpse of the little homes up the steps....don't miss this but make the trip on your own steam, the tours are hectic and crowded

Lovely Santorini town - lots of little alleyways to explore. All in traditional Santorini style - a lovely place to visit rather than the main tourist attractions of Thira and Oia.

Amazing sunset views? Not really. Famous landmarks? None. Stunning coastline? Nope. In fact, it’s hard to explain what makes Emporio so lovely, but if I had to sum it up in one word it would be ‘charm’.

The more modern part of the town at the bottom of the hill is nothing to shout about. So park up your car/scooter/quad bike, put your phone away (Google Maps won’t help you here) and get lost in the labyrinthine streets of Emporio.

The architecture is a feat of human ingenuity, with houses, stairs and walkways seemingly sculpted out of the landscape. Everything feels like it’s been built in 3/4 size, with tiny doorways, narrow alleys and mini steps. Then you’ll turn a corner expecting a dead end and you’ll suddenly find a church or cafe (such as The Old Barbers).

It’s not big and it doesn’t take long to roam around (even if you do get a bit lost), but it’s one of those unique places where you can’t help but fall for its charms.

Emporio was recommended to us to as an example of a well kept Santorinian village.

The castle isn't really a castle - more a collection of small quiant houses, and narrow passages.

If you like taking photographs, this is for you.

To see how local people lived 50 or 100 years ago. Nothing has changed - curvy clean and narrow streets, white and yellow houses, small front doors, churches and a half-destroyed Venetian tower.
Take a break at Vassili's restaurant 'The Old barber' or Vangelli's café 'To Kafenedaki tou Emboriou', to taste something special. A small art shop on the top offers a great selection of handmade souvenirs.
A wonderful place that's worth it.

Take my advice.... don’t just go to see the Castelli, stroll around the myriad alleyways of this lovely traditional village. It’s fab, great for photography and gives a great flavour of Santorini village life.

Emporio, unlike neighbouring Pirgos, seems relatively unspoilt by mass tourism so you can climb the steep streets to the top of the town without being bothered by souvenir sellers etc.
