- Pinghong SinPhnom Penh, Cambodia9 contributionsWorth the visiting.Absolutely amazing to see these temples even though they’re as not as majestic as the ones you see in Siem Reap. Do hire a tour guide to listen to the stories of these temples. When you hire a tour guide, you need to choose those who wear Ministry of Tourism uniforms (do not hire those policemen around- they might not give you accurate info about the temples). They are locals affiliated with the local community. They don’t get paid by any institutions. They are basically volunteers. Hiring them as your tour guides means supporting them. ✌️✌️Visited January 2024Traveled soloWritten January 27, 2024

The ruins are set in a pleasant, shady forest; though it is best to get there early in the morning and bring plenty to drink. We spent about 2hrs exploring the site, which is signposted and surprisingly tidy compared to other attractions in Cambodia. Not many tourists here - quite a bonus! Our driver would have taken us to Phnom Santuk temple as well, but this would have meant arriving at the hottest time of day. If you have the time, it would be better to take a midday break and then set out for Santuk temple later in the afternoon. We decided to do an evening river cruise from Sambor Village Lodge instead.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 21, 2024
- Matthew Mahgerfteh1 contributionDiscovering the Tranquil Majesty of Sambo Preykuk Temples: Cambodia’s Ancient Hidden GemThe Sambo Preykuk Temples in Cambodia are a hidden gem that feels like stepping back in time. Tucked away in the quiet countryside of Kampong Thom province, this ancient temple complex, which dates back to the 7th century, is one of the oldest in the country. It’s a place where history and nature blend seamlessly, creating an atmosphere that’s both peaceful and awe-inspiring. One of the best things about Sambo Preykuk is that it’s not overrun with tourists. Unlike the busy temples of Angkor, you can wander these ruins at your own pace, often without another soul in sight. The temples are surrounded by lush forest, and the detailed brick carvings and statues have a weathered beauty that speaks to their age and the stories they hold. The site is made up of three main groups of temples—each with its own character and charm. The Central, Northern, and Southern groups all offer different glimpses into the artistry and spirituality of the ancient Chenla Kingdom. From the intricate carvings to the majestic lion statues, there’s a lot to admire. Getting to Sambo Preykuk does require a bit of effort, as it’s off the beaten path. The journey is part of the adventure, but it’s good to be prepared—bring water, some snacks, and sturdy shoes for exploring. The facilities around the site are pretty basic, but that’s part of what keeps it so authentic and unspoiled.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 6, 2024

These were the first ancient temples we visited in Cambodia which was an appropriate start because they are about 300 years older than some temples in the Siem Reap area. We had a car so were able to drive to different areas within this complex then go for walks in the forest viewing the various walls and temple sites. The information signs were clear and helpful. The temples were much smaller than ones we saw later but they were spread over a large area and had a special peaceful feel in the forest.

We visited Sambo PreyKuk Temple on our way to Phnom Penh. The day we visited it was so quiet and tranquil that we seemed be there by ourselves wandering through the trees to the various temples. It is well worth visiting to see how the forest has taken over some of the temples and restoration work taking place.

This is a very nice temple complex located about one hour north east of Kampong Thom. There are three main sites within the complex which are located several hundred metres from each other. You can walk but, if you came by tuk tuk, the driver will take you around. The entrance fee is $10 USD and there are guides available for $6 USD. There is no map given out with the entrance ticket, a pity, so download one to your phone before you go, so you know where you are. I guess they want you to hire a guide. There are signs at each complex that tell you what area you are at, in Kymer and English.
Strongly advise using Kampong Thom Transport Association tuk tuk drivers to get there and back. Their drivers all have uniforms. Return fare is set at $15 USD. I made the mistake of using Mr. Ney, who spoke good English when I talked to him the day before. He blew me off for another fare and stuck me with an inbred relative, who spoke no English, answered “yes” to every question, and then did whatever he wanted, which was not what I wanted. Do not use Mr Ney!! Your hotel can probably set you up with an Association registered driver.

Had been wanting to visit for a while and finally decided to take a car iso flying from PNH to REP.
- allow 2.5 hours driving time from PNH
- plenty of photo stops on the way, will catch on the return trip
- $3 entrance fee
- limited information regarding the ruins once there, follow your nose
- a number of young school age children selling krama and wanting to walk with you. Politely refused as would suggest paying extra ticket price and have the money used to put them in school.
- ruins widespread, with similar descriptions at each
- was there at 11am, maybe lucky as very peaceful as Angkor Thom complex busy.
- for post walk bite 10 minutes along once back on the main highway to REP. Local restaurant, just across bridge call Prey Pros. Clean and tidy with wifi

Ask for Mr. B to take you there, he is usually parked outside Arunras Guesthouse. An incredibly nice driver who speaks pretty good English. He took us via his village on the way back and told us interesting facts about living in Cambodia. Highly recommended! Temples are definitely worth a visit, no tourists and are in the middle of a jungle, loved it.

This was my second trip to Sambour, the first being pre-Covid19. At time of writing [July 2022] it's even quieter: they are getting single-figure tourists per day, so you're pretty much guaranteed having the forest to yourself. I hired one of the Community Guides as it's a project worth supporting. It's $10 for an hour-plus walk in the woods with someone who knows the history. I love Sambour. It's not as impressive as the Angkor complex but there's a uniqueness to it and the woods are lovely. It also gives a framework to how Cambodia's older civilization developed. Also, Kampong Thom is a nice, weird sort of a stop-off. Not much going on, but it breaks the journey if you're coming up from the capital. Personally I think these temples are well worth a visit.

We loved walking through the jungle and visiting the temples at our pace.
Little to no tourists, we had the temples to ourselves.
10$ entry fee but the money goes to promote tourism at this site
If you have time to stop on your way back from Angkor Wat, it’s a good idea.
