A sad experience
Jun 2016 • Family
Tokuyama Zoo is an old and rundown zoo that just made me feel sad to walk around in. The habitats were small and unnatural. I can not imagine that the animals feel happy there. The only thing making me rate it a 2 instead of 1 is the petting zoo that is recently opened. It felt like a totally different place. The zoo is currently building a new area for the animals that will hopefully make it a better place.

The most depressing zoo I've ever visited.

This zoo is depressing. Japan does a lot of things well, but up-keeping a zoo is not one of them. If you are from the states (and probably western europe), do not go to this zoo. The smallest zoo in the states is better up kept than this one. The animals are old, sickly, and stuck in tiny concrete boxes without enough room to properly exercise. The gigantic hippo had what could only be described as a child-sized shallow pool. The polar bear had some water and a platform. The black panther was mostly grey and dying. The giraffe's tail was falling off. The only animals that had suitable habitats were the red pandas, the small mammals, and the birds. If you like animals, and if you enjoy not being depressed, do not visit Shunan zoo.
