We stayed at a ryokan ( takimakan ) for a night to fully experience the Ginza Onsen In winter. We were lucky to witness snow on the one night we spent there. It was very beautiful to walk the Main Street of Ginzan Onsen in the morning with the surrounding hills covered with snow and the roaring waterfall at the end of the street. A very peaceful and picturesque place. I managed to get up around 5 am while it was snowing and go to the amazing Onsen at the ryokan. It was a once in a lifetime experience to soak in Onsen, overlooking the waterfall and snow flakes falling.

A very interesting place to visit during our 2016 Autumn leaf-viewing Trip.
Ginzan Onsen 銀山溫泉老街 has a collection of old buildings, houses, and hotels (and hot spring inside, of course). There’s a stream cut thru the town and a waterfall at the end of it.

I have stayed one night at Takimikan which so has outdoor Onsen. Since Ginza Onsen is pretty Japanese and traditional, I would assume tattoos are not allowed. In more touristy (with lots of foreign tourists) places like Kiroro Ski Resort in Hokkaido, there are notices that say that small fashion tattoos are okay. We are talking about big ski resorts like Kiroro. Places like Ginzan mostly invite Japanese tourists with very few foreign tourist. If yours is small enough, you may be able to get away with it. When I was in Takimikan, I was in the Onsen twice and saw Only one other person in the Onsen. So if no one is there at the time that you go to the Onsen, it probably would be okay. Hope this helps.
