Yonezawa matsuri is a special matsuri since it commemorates a famous historical battle between two samourai clans. The battle is on the last day of the matsuri and it is worth seeing it. In case of full coin luggage lockers at yonezawa station a very nice lady in a sake shop can keep the luggage for free. The shop is 5 mn walking on the main road from the station and can be easily recognized with its whiskey bottle sign in front of the shop. We were directed there by a lady at the tourist information center at Yonazawa station. Yonezawa beef is great don't forget to taste it!

Uesugi Shrine, Japanese gardens and history together with a center for visual arts.

In February the community holds The festival of lights from this place where 300 snow lanterns are made and over 3000 candles light the way. Local vendors set up with hot food and my favorite is the local traditional precision drum band that plays every hour.

On this early morning visit I woke up early to watch the sun rise over the shrine. I also want to to a LIVE broadcast using the Periscope app. The live broadcast went well with many friends and family tuning in to watch. However, using the internet connection and a sim card I purchased in Japan was not the greatest from live video broadcasting. Hens, the quality of the video is not the greatest in this case. Lesson learned.

This was a great morning to do this walk as it was a sunny day.

A great starting point for visiting the various shrines and monuments dedicated to the great Uesugi samurai clan. A large shrine dedicated to Kenshin Uesugi, the founder of the powerful clan in on the castle ruins ground. A great statue of the daimyo Kenshin. Many things to see in a serene park. A large restaurant and souvenir shop on site. A bunch of smaller food stalls with very inexpensive and delicious local delicacies. Fairly easy walk from the train station.

This place is great for sightseeing all year around. But this time of the year, it's also great for "hanami" (admiring the cherry blossoms, and partying). This park is one of the best spots for cherry blossoms in this area, with cherry trees surrounding the lake around the castle. It only lasts for about two weeks, so hurry.

There's nothing left of the castle here, except the moat and a bit of the ramparts, but the park was pretty. The central feature now is a large, well-appointed shrine, with some nice subordinate shrines around it. The moat is well maintained. It rained during our visit, but that didn't interfere with our enjoyment.
