There's a bus from the valley which takes hikers here. You can then walk back to the Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine, or head west to Kobiro-toge and take the bus back to the hot springs spa. This routing is covered in "The Nakahechi Trail;...More

A short walk up the road (0.5 Km) you come to this wayside shrine in woodland. Many spectacular plants by the roadside along the way and it's a lovely peaceful and soul-calming spot.

This pretty little shrine is well known primarily because it is reachable by public bus from Hongu and sits at a local high point on the Kumano Kodo. From here hikers may take one of two branches heading to either Hongu or Yunomine onsen (Agaki-goe...More

This is a place pilgrims walking the Kumano Kodo will simply walk through. For day-trippers, it's an excellent short (1/2 day) generally easy walk mostly downhill to Hongu Taisha shrine with its own bus stop. Either way you do it, we saw more walkers when...More

You can walk a very pleasant 7 km to Hongu Taisha from Hosshinmon Oji. A pleasant little shrine with a nice story.

This particular Oji is not nearly as grand as some of the many others that line the Kumano Kodo, and my main impression is as a trail head (as another reviewer noted). It marks the point where the main trail from Takijiri finally starts to...More

A point of the Kumano Kodo Way. Chosen by most to taste the hike enroute to Kuamno Hongu Taisha. A bus stop allows you to visit this section and return in one day to your accomodation. Good way to get a quick glimpse of this...More
