The onsen jewel of Japan has to be the Sennin-buro. This giant rotenburo (outdoor bath), created by damming the Oto River, measures about 120m (length) by 40m (width). It was washed away by a flood on 14 Dec. It took a week to rebuilt. We were told that seven ryokans each pay about ¥200,000 to maintain the Sennin-buro from Dec to Feb. It is available for free to the public and will be adorned with big lanterns in January. We were very happy to be able to soak ourselves in the Sennin-buro. In fact we were the first to use the river bath after its rebuild! It was an awesome experience of the palpable confluence of hot and cold spring waters in the Sennin-buro. We were mesmerised by the fine bubbles of hotspring water rising rapidly to the top, forming a layer of hot water around our necks while the lower layer of water remains cold, from our bums up. It was a unique experience! The uneven distribution of hot and cold waters allowed us to move around the huge Sennin-buro to find a spot that is just right for each of us. We called this our Hot Water Hunt :p. Definitely an Onsen Jewel that we will treasure! PS: (1) The Sennin-buro is right in front of the Ashita-no-mori Pension. The owners are accommodating. (2) Bring along your favourite swimming costume or better still, wear it underneath your yukata, and a towel to dry yourself. (3) Have a bottle of water on hand to hydrate yourself and enjoy a longer soak in the Sennin-buro. Enjoy!
