Vila Velha is a "must do" tour if you are staying for some days in Curitiba. It is better to book a tour in advance, as the regular buses stop in the highway and the visitor office is a bit far away. Local guides take you to the main attrations and you should plan 3 hours in place to visit everything. A good tip is to take a tour that stops for lunch at Witmarsum, an idyllic small village on the way back to Curitiba. It was founded by menonites and people still speak German here!

For us it was really hard to find some information about Vila Velha and how to get there from Curitiba. That's why we write this, to hopefully help you and make it easier to find your way to get there.
To get to parque estadual Vila Velha you can take 2 buses (as you can see on the picture). We couldn't find any information about these buses, and that's why we rent a car. It was just 120R for one day. The way to get there is really easy.

Parque estadual Vila Velha is a really big park but you can't just go around. It has 2 places where you can get (by bus) and go around. So when you arrive you have to buy 1 or 2 ( depends if you want to see both places) bustickets. One costs 15R and the other one 10R.
You go buy bus to the places where you'll be guided around. You have to go with a guide, so it's not a park where you can go around by yourself.
I made some pictures from the map. The left side is one busride, the right side is the other one.
At the top of the map, in between the two bus destinations you see a 16km path throught the forrest. We wanted to do that trail but you have to book it and they only do that trail in weekends.

At the end we enjoyed being there and saw some beautiful nature, but we wanted to hike a little more and rather go without a guide cause they don't speak any English, only Portugues, so we walked with the but didn't understand anything.

Located only 90 km away from Curitiba, the park offers unique and impressive natural phenomena. Despite the proximity, it won't be the first spot to be recommend to you by the local people, when you arrive in Curitiba, but apparently this is because they don't really know it. Nature lovers must not miss. There are two guided bus tours to the two main phenomena - the "furnas" and the "arenitos" (sandstones), and there are several hiking trails, including a fairly long ones. The "furnas" are very interesting but the tour is a bit boring. It can be easily improved if the guide was explaining and describing these phenomena in an interesting way, but he did not... The sandstones are so amazing that you can enjoy it with or without (rather with...) the guide best explanation. At the sandstones you can choose between a short track (1100m) or a short + medium track (further 1600 m). This is highly recommended, don't miss the whole track.
The guides we had lack enthusiasm and provided very little information. It was most unfortunate. They can do much better on that front, if they wish, because the phenomena is quite amazing.

We found it difficult to find information about this Vila Velha, but we are very pleased to have gone.
We drove there (motorhome). At the time of our visit the park guards were on strike (for better pay) but a man at the gate was very helpful.
We walked from the visitor centre to the rock formations and back instead of using the bus service. The paths around the formations a very well maintained.

We had read that you can swim in one of the Furnas there, but that and the elevator service down into it ceased operating over 10 years ago. Still, the Furnas are very impressive, and you can get a very good impression of their size. Information boards are written in Portuguese and English.

Tumbled Historical and Artistic Heritage State in 1966, the Park of Vila Velha has 3122.11 acres in its many natural attractions. Highlights for the sandstones, Furnas and Golden Pond (crystalline waters with shoals visible to the eye). The place is conducive walks. All of the park's fauna living in the wild. Wonderful place to visit near Curitiba.

This is a small park with bus to trails and guides. There is a small cafe but you might want to bring your lunch.

From the times the are was covered by the sea and Latin America, Africa, India, Oceania and Antarctic formed one single continent named Gondwana, some 300 million years ago, Vila Velha State Park is an agglomerate of huge sandstone blocks. Sculptured throughout the last 1.8 million years by the rain and the wind, the blocks have been shaped into a camel, a glass and some others. In the same park, and somewhat contiguous to the sandstone sculptures are Furnas and Golden Lagoon, two other intriguing, fascinating geological formations that deserve a visit, as well. The Vila velha State Park is just 45 km North from Curitiba on a beautiful, scenic highway.

I went to Vila Velha about 15 years ago and it's nice to see how the Brazilians stepped up and made some changes to reinforce preservation of this state park. Our guide ended up being a childhood friend of my dad's back in the 50s in Ponta Grossa, that was pretty cool. The walk around the ruins is a nice little scenic workout. The furnas and lagoa dourada are an ok added bonus. This park really should be a must visit if you're in the area, a trip that only takes about 3-4 hours.

If you are a nature lover it is a very good place to go. You will have to walk, so if you have any disability it is better to go to somewhere else. However, the trekking is easy and even children can do this. The place is very beautiful and you will see a lot of natural sculptures. Remember to bring a bottle of water and some snacks, and a camera of course. The structure for tourists need some improvements.
