This temple is the first of the pilgrimage temples from the 66th to the 88th temple in Kagawa Prefecture, known as the Nirvana Dojo of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is a wonderful temple, but it is easy to imagine how people climbed up here in the past and how difficult it must have been to reach this temple. It seems impossible for humans to build such a large temple on the side of such a high mountain. It is an ancient and famous temple that is said to have been founded by Kukai in 789 AD. It is quite a distance from the ropeway summit station to the temple, but the numerous expressive arhat statues lined up on the side of the approach are so beautiful that they make you forget the distance. Each arhat with a different expression soothes your heart every time you come on the pilgrimage. The principal image, the statue of Senju Kannon Bodhisattva, said to have been made by Kukai, has been designated as an important cultural property by the national government. This was originally a Buddhist space with many temple buildings and twelve temples and eight branch temples, so it was also called "Western Koyasan." The reason why so many buildings remain here is because they were not damaged by Chosokabe Motochika, the arsonist and murderer of Shikoku. He was a terrible enemy of cultural properties, having destroyed more than half of the cultural properties in Shikoku. There is also a legend that even at that time, the head priest of this temple reprimanded him, saying that he was too small-minded to conquer Shikoku, and that even the province of Tosa was too much.

Unpenji (not Unbenji) is the tallest Ohenro temple. The ropeway is exciting and impressive and the Rakan figures are well worth the visit. many buildings are quite new - interesting to see a relatively "rich" temple in the area. Very impressive

Peaceful among the Cedars and Cypress Trees. Unpenji has 500 Arhat States that it is famous for, made in recent years, they line some of the pathways, all with different faces and postures. Beautiful place.
